Here we go! Barcelona sign rodri. Finally, an actual defensive midfielder
Something has happened at Barcelona that was beginning to sound almost as exotic as a quiet transfer window. The club have found a successor to Sergio Busquets who is, remarkably, an actual defensive midfielder. Fabrizio Romano has delivered his “here we go” for Rodri’s move from Manchester City.
According to the Italian journalist, Manchester City have accepted Barcelona’s latest offer and a full agreement has been reached. The official club announcements are still pending, with Rodri expected to undergo his medical examinations, sign the necessary documents and be presented as a Barcelona player.
Then comes registration, of course. At most clubs, this is considered a formality. At Barcelona, it has become a separate sporting discipline, traditionally contested against the clock and accompanied by calculators, bank guarantees and repeated assurances that everything is under control.
Barcelona had been pursuing the Spanish midfielder for several weeks. Their opening proposal of approximately €45 million was firmly rejected. “The Guardian” subsequently reported an improved offer worth around €60 million, while later reports suggested a further bid approaching €70 million. The final structure of the agreement has not yet been disclosed.
Rodri was left out of Manchester City’s squad for Sunday’s Community Shield match against Arsenal and did not travel with the team to Cardiff. His absence could initially be explained by his recovery from minor back surgery. A few hours later, however, Romano ended the speculation by confirming the agreement.
Barcelona are signing the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner and one of the finest defensive midfielders in world football. Rodri joined Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2019, won every major club honour available in England and scored the winning goal against Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final.
For years, Barcelona attempted to convince everyone — and occasionally themselves — that the number six position could be filled by a centre-back, an attacking midfielder, a tactical adjustment or a particularly optimistic press conference. Hansi Flick will now receive a player who does not require any such experiments.
From a sporting perspective, this is an elite signing. Rodri can control the tempo, protect the defence, dominate physical contests and make the correct decisions under pressure. In other words, he performs precisely the duties Barcelona had been asking completely different types of players to perform since Busquets left.
Barcelona’s board deserve credit this time. Signing Rodri is a major statement and could transform Flick’s midfield. The club now simply have to avoid ruining the final stage of the operation. In Barcelona’s case, that is not an insult. It is mandatory quality control.
