Rodri Could Steal the Entire Joan Gamper Show Without Even Playing
Barcelona are preparing to present their squad for the 2026/27 season. There will be new signings, speeches, the return of the Joan Gamper Trophy to Spotify Camp Nou and a match against Africa’s most successful club. Everything has been carefully arranged. Yet the biggest attraction of the evening may be a player who will not step onto the pitch.
That player is, of course, Rodri. The Spanish midfielder arrived at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper on Tuesday morning and underwent his medical ahead of signing a four-year contract with Barcelona. João Cancelo was also at the training complex to complete the tests required for his latest return to the club.
According to AS, Barcelona want Rodri’s contract signed and his presentation completed on Tuesday. If the remaining paperwork with Manchester City is not ready in time, the ceremony could be moved to Wednesday and included in the events surrounding the Joan Gamper Trophy.
Rodri is expected to take part in the squad presentation, but he will not play against Al Ahly. He has not trained with Hansi Flick’s team, recently underwent back surgery and only arrived in Catalonia on Monday evening. Throwing him into a match less than two days later would be a risk even for a club that enjoys completing several operations at once during the summer.
That does not mean Rodri will spend the evening in the background. After landing in Barcelona, he described playing for the club as a dream and immediately spoke about challenging for the Champions League and every other available trophy. It took only a few sentences for the biggest story before the Al Ahly game to become something other than the Al Ahly game.
The match will be played at Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday, 19 August, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm local time. It will be Barcelona’s first home appearance of the 2026/27 season and the first Joan Gamper Trophy held at the stadium since its reopening. Last year’s edition took place at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, where Barcelona defeated Como 1907 by five goals to nil.
Al Ahly will not be travelling to Barcelona merely to complete the occasion. The Cairo giants will become the first Egyptian and African club to compete in the Joan Gamper Trophy. They have won their domestic league 45 times and lifted the CAF Champions League on 12 occasions. This may be a friendly, but Barcelona have invited an opponent with a trophy cabinet that requires considerably more than one shelf.
The game itself will only be part of the evening. Barcelona will officially present the new squad to their supporters, and Rodri could appear in front of the crowd as the club’s biggest summer signing. If the remaining formalities are completed, the Ballon d’Or winner will receive his welcome before watching the match from a safe distance.
The entire event will be shown live on Barça Play for club members and Culers Premium subscribers. An English-language broadcast will also be available through Barcelona’s official YouTube channel, although access requires the paid Premium package.
Barcelona will play for another Joan Gamper Trophy, unveil their rebuilt squad and bring the occasion back to Spotify Camp Nou. Rodri will do none of the running, tackling or passing, but may still receive the loudest welcome of the night. The club will make sure the spotlight knows where to point.
