The Bernabéu Lights Up
The Bernabéu has already hosted football, concerts, business events and the first NFL game played in Spain. Somehow, it also remains the largest active construction site among stadiums still being used for matches. Real Madrid have now moved on to another piece of the project.
A huge “Bernabéu” sign has appeared on the main façade overlooking Paseo de la Castellana. The letters were installed last week and their lighting system is currently being tested. The club is checking how the stadium’s new branding will look after dark.
White is the main option, but several colour sequences have also been tested. The letters have been illuminated in yellow, green and white, while another version replaced the green with red.
The façade is not yet complete. A new stadium logo is expected to be installed beside the name in the coming days. The work is due to be ready before Real Madrid return to the Bernabéu on 26 August for their match against Real Sociedad.
The shortened name is not a random choice. Madrid began promoting “Bernabéu” instead of the traditional “Estadio Santiago Bernabéu” in November 2025, when the venue hosted Spain’s first NFL game. The club wants a simpler international brand that can also be used for events unrelated to football.
The letters were produced and installed by Tecnoseñal, a company based in Herencia in the province of Ciudad Real. Spanish newspaper AS highlighted the symbolic connection between the company and the man after whom the stadium is named. Tecnoseñal comes from the La Mancha region, as did Santiago Bernabéu, who was born in Almansa in the neighbouring province of Albacete.
The Castellana façade is not the only area being updated. Madrid also plan to place the club’s name and crest at Plaza de Sagrados Corazones, in front of the Bernabéu Market. Additional LED displays are being installed around the third tier inside the stadium.
The redevelopment began in 2019 and is finally approaching completion, although the words “finishing touches” lost all sense of time at the Bernabéu several years ago. At least this particular change is already visible. Quite literally, because the new sign will be difficult to miss once night falls.
Real Madrid did not rebuild the stadium simply to make it look better during football broadcasts. The Bernabéu is supposed to operate throughout the year, attract major events and generate revenue of its own. The illuminated name is therefore more than decoration. It is the sign above the entrance to one of the club’s biggest businesses.
