Bernardo Silva Finally Unveiled
Bernardo Silva had already trained with the squad, featured during preseason and heard José Mourinho say that he needed to improve his physical condition. Now his official presentation has finally caught up with him. Real Madrid formally welcomed the Portuguese midfielder 33 days after announcing his signing.
The closed-door ceremony took place at Ciudad Real Madrid. Silva signed a contract running until 30 June 2028 in the presence of Florentino Pérez. His family, club honorary president José Martínez Pirri and Real Madrid representatives also attended the event.
After putting pen to paper, Silva received the traditional welcome package: a replica of the Bernabéu, a watch and a shirt carrying his name. He will wear number 20 this season.
“When you are a child and you do not yet know whether you will become a footballer, your dream is to play for Real Madrid,” Silva said. “I am very happy to be here.”
The Portuguese midfielder already knows the Bernabéu well from his years at Manchester City. He visited Madrid several times as an opponent, particularly in the Champions League. This time, however, he viewed the club’s trophy collection as a Real Madrid player.
“I have played here many times. Seeing the 15 Champions League trophies is always impressive, but seeing them as a player of this club is even more special. Playing for a club like this is not for everyone.”
Madrid signed the 32-year-old on a free transfer after his Manchester City contract expired. He is another experienced addition recruited to compete for trophies immediately, rather than to spend several years waiting for a project to develop.
Silva spent nine seasons in England, making 460 appearances for City, scoring 76 goals and providing 77 assists. He won six Premier League titles and lifted the Champions League trophy in 2023. During that entire spell, he missed only 11 matches through injury, which is almost suspiciously healthy considering the number of games he played.
Mourinho can use him in central midfield, as an attacking midfielder or on the right wing. Silva is not supposed to be the direct replacement for one specific player. He gives the coach something Madrid have lacked in recent seasons: control in possession, a final pass and calmness under pressure.
The formalities were completed slightly late, but the player himself no longer has to wait. Silva is preparing with the squad for Real Madrid’s league opener against Espanyol. His first appearance at the Bernabéu could follow four days later against Real Sociedad.
The presentation did not reveal any transfer secret. It confirmed that Madrid have acquired, without paying a transfer fee, an enormously experienced player with exceptional durability and plenty of quality left. Mourinho received someone ready to contribute immediately. All Florentino Pérez had left to do was hand him the watch and the shirt.
