Gabriel Jesus arrives in Barcelona: “My knee is perfect”
Gabriel Jesus has arrived in Barcelona before completing his move from Arsenal for around €10m plus add-ons. The Brazilian also addressed his knee.
Gabriel Jesus has arrived in Barcelona to undergo his medical before signing his contract. Barça are expected to pay Arsenal around €10 million plus add-ons. The Brazilian began with an assurance that carries more weight than a routine greeting in his case: “My knee is perfect.”
FIRST THE KNEE, THEN THE CONTRACT
Gabriel Jesus landed in Barcelona on Monday. He was asked about the transfer, his ambitions and his physical condition. The most important answer concerned his knee.
“My knee is perfect,” the 29-year-old striker said, as quoted by AS.
That does not complete the operation. Jesus must still pass his medical before he can sign his contract and officially become a Barcelona player. His presentation is planned for Tuesday, although the club have yet to issue a statement confirming the transfer.
€10 MILLION — WITH A FEW EXTRAS
Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Arsenal worth around €10 million. According to Matteo Moretto, add-ons could increase the total fee by another €5 million, while the London club are expected to retain a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
The most widely reported contract formula is a two-year deal with an option for a third season. Brazilian outlet UOL has instead reported a three-year agreement. The exact terms should become clear once the transfer is officially announced.
Barça have therefore chosen a considerably cheaper solution than the names pursued throughout the summer. Julián Álvarez was supposed to be the major arrival, but Atlético Madrid refused to strengthen a domestic rival. Barcelona wanted a top-level centre-forward and are now signing a player Arsenal left out of their opening two matchday squads.
The price has fallen. The risk has not necessarily followed.
FLICK GETS A FORWARD, NOT A GUARANTEE
Jesus made 123 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists. He can play through the middle, move into wider areas and contribute to the press. His mobility and work without the ball are among the qualities expected to suit Hansi Flick.
His fitness record remains the concern. Jesus suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2025 and started only three Premier League matches last season. Barcelona are not signing a player at the peak of his career. They are backing themselves to rebuild one who can still be highly effective when fully fit.
At around €10 million, that can be considered a reasonable risk — provided Monday’s examination supports the player’s own assessment of his knee.
ÁLVAREZ REMAINS IN THE PLAN
Signing Jesus does not necessarily mean Barcelona have abandoned their interest in Julián Álvarez. Sky Sports reports that the club consider the two operations separate. The Argentine remains a long-term target, but Atlético have no intention of selling him directly to a league rival.
For now, Flick is set to receive Gabriel Jesus: experienced, versatile and available without requiring another financial miracle. Barça are not signing their dream number nine. They are signing someone who could make the absence of that dream number nine slightly less obvious.
First, however, he must pass the one test that cannot be won by reputation.
