Álvarez rejected other clubs and still wants Barcelona. The transfer has been postponed indefinitely
Fabrizio Romano reports that Julián Álvarez rejected late approaches and still considers Barcelona his preferred destination for the future.
Julián Álvarez will remain at Atlético Madrid, but he has not abandoned the idea of joining Barcelona. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Argentine rejected approaches received during the final hours of the transfer window. He also refused to give Arsenal the green light. His preferred destination has not changed. Only the date has moved, from “this summer” to the much safer and considerably broader “in the future.”
ARSENAL WAITED, ÁLVAREZ DID NOT CHANGE HIS MIND
Arsenal spent the final weeks of the window exploring a move for Álvarez. The English club contacted Atlético and tried to establish whether the striker would consider returning to the Premier League. Before making a concrete move, however, they needed encouragement from the player.
They did not receive it.
According to Romano, Álvarez gave Arsenal no indication that his position had changed. Several other clubs also checked his availability during the final hours of the window, but they were told that the Argentine would not choose a different destination simply because Barcelona had been unable to complete the operation.
It is significant information, but it is not yet a declaration that allows Barcelona to reserve a place for him in the Camp Nou dressing room. Álvarez wants Barcelona. Atlético do not want to negotiate with Barcelona. For now, both sides of the story remain remarkably consistent.
NO TRANSFER, BUT THE DREAM REMAINS
Álvarez took part in Atlético’s training session on Tuesday as normal. The player, his family, his representatives and the club all expect him to finish the current window as a member of Diego Simeone’s squad.
Barcelona are not planning another late attempt. The club are set to complete the arrival of Gabriel Jesus, meaning the subject of signing another centre-forward has been closed for the time being.
The saga therefore ends not with a transfer, but with a change of tense. Álvarez is not “joining Barcelona.” He “remains convinced about joining Barcelona in the future.” The difference cannot be contained at the end of a sentence. It includes Atlético’s entire position, the player’s contract and an unknown number of future transfer windows.
ATLÉTICO BUILT A WALL
The main obstacle was neither a lack of interest from Barcelona nor the player’s position. Atlético officially refused to negotiate with the Catalan club.
The Madrid club’s board unanimously supported the decision not to sell Álvarez to Barcelona. Its statement said that talks had not taken place and would not take place because, in Atlético’s view, Barça had failed to meet the required standards of professionalism and respect.
That response was as far removed from an ordinary attempt to raise the price as possible. Atlético did not put a higher valuation on the table. They removed the table altogether.
Álvarez’s position was not enough to change the decision. The Argentine is under contract until 2030, so Atlético were not forced to choose between selling immediately and risking losing him for nothing in the near future.
BARCELONA RECEIVED A PROMISE, NOT A SIGNATURE
For Barcelona, the latest report is both encouraging and of limited practical use. The club know that one of their main attacking targets still considers a move to Camp Nou his preferred option. They do not need to convince the player. They would need to convince Atlético, which currently appears to be a considerably more difficult task.
The situation could return in a future transfer window. Much will depend on Álvarez’s relationship with his club, his performances, Atlético’s position and Barcelona’s financial possibilities. Rejecting other approaches does not give Barça priority in negotiations or reduce the asking price.
Álvarez has remained loyal to his plan. Barcelona can make a note of that and keep his agent’s number. There is little more they can take from the story for now.
FOR NOW, BARCELONA WILL HAVE JESUS INSTEAD
Barcelona are ending the summer with Gabriel Jesus rather than Álvarez. The Brazilian is expected to strengthen the attack following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. He will receive the first opportunity to establish himself in Hansi Flick’s team.
Álvarez remains a plan for the future. The problem is that the future has no transfer fee, no date for a medical and no approval from Atlético. It does, however, contain everything Barcelona tend to enjoy in stories of this kind: a major name, a clear desire and an obstacle that cannot currently be removed.
The Argentine rejected the other destinations and remained in Madrid. Barça did not win the race for his signature. They only won the race for first place on his wish list.
