Gabriel Jesus officially joins Barcelona. Plan B gets the number 9 and a deal until 2029
Gabriel Jesus has officially joined Barcelona from Arsenal. The Brazilian striker has signed a three-year contract running until June 2029.
FC Barcelona have officially confirmed the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal. The Brazilian has signed a three-year contract running until 30 June 2029. The club did not disclose the fee, but reports place the initial payment at around €10 million. After spending weeks knocking on Atlético Madrid’s locked door, Deco has finally found a striker at a club that was actually willing to sell.
PLAN B HAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE LABEL
Julián Álvarez remained Barcelona’s first choice. Atlético had no intention of strengthening a domestic rival, however, and consistently refused to begin negotiations. Gabriel Jesus emerged as a considerably cheaper, quicker and, most importantly, achievable solution.
The Brazilian has not tried to pretend that his name spent the entire summer in the middle of Deco’s board surrounded by red hearts. During his presentation, he addressed his place in the transfer hierarchy directly.
“I am not offended when people call me Plan B,” he admitted.
It is a sensible start. Barcelona spent weeks pursuing a striker whose club did not want to sell. They eventually signed one Arsenal no longer required. Plan B reached Catalonia before Plan A could offer anything more encouraging than “perhaps one day”.
BARCELONA HAVE NOT DISCLOSED THE FEE
Barcelona’s official announcement confirmed the agreement with Arsenal and the length of the contract, but contained no financial details. The most widely reported figure is an initial €10 million. Accounts of the add-ons differ, with another €4 million or €5 million potentially due.
Even if every bonus is triggered, it remains a modest fee for a forward with more than 200 Premier League appearances. That price did not fall from the sky, however. It reflects the last 18 months of Jesus’s career, his fitness problems and his loss of status under Mikel Arteta.
Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres had moved ahead of him in Arsenal’s hierarchy. The Brazilian had recently been training away from the main group, already aware that his future lay outside London. Barcelona have not uncovered a secret opportunity that everybody else somehow missed. They have purchased an experienced striker at a substantial discount, together with the reason for that discount.
HIS KNEE REMAINS THE BIGGEST QUESTION
Gabriel Jesus suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2025 and remained unavailable until December. He made 14 appearances for Arsenal last season and scored three goals.
After landing in Barcelona, he insisted that his knee was in perfect condition. He also passed his medical before signing the three-year contract. Medical clearance does not answer the question of how his body will cope with regular football after such a long absence.
Barcelona have paid a small fee, but they have not signed a risk-free player. If Jesus recovers the sharp movement, pressing and energy he possessed before the injury, the deal could look extremely sensible. If he does not, a contract running until 2029 will begin to feel considerably longer than it did during his presentation.
HE ARRIVED TO WATCH FIVE GOALS WITHOUT HIM
Jesus watched from the stands as Barcelona defeated Rayo Vallecano 5–2. His new team-mates also demonstrated that they can score without a traditional number nine. Raphinha struck twice, Lamine Yamal added another two and Flick’s attack kept moving without waiting for its final reinforcement.
That is excellent news for the coach and slightly less convenient for the new striker. Jesus is not joining a team with an empty place reserved exclusively for him. Given Raphinha’s current form and the productivity of the entire forward line, the Brazilian could begin his Barcelona career on the bench. If his competitors maintain this level, he may settle there for longer than the welcoming photographs suggested.
Jesus has stressed that he can play both through the middle and on the wing. His versatility improves his chances of earning minutes, but it also places him in competition across several areas that hardly appear vacant.
FLICK GETS A STRIKER HE KNOWS WELL
Hansi Flick has made no attempt to hide his satisfaction with the deal. The German admitted he was surprised that Barcelona had the opportunity to sign Jesus and believes the forward’s style suits his team.
The Brazilian brings experience, aggressive pressing, combination play and a willingness to move beyond the penalty area. He made 236 appearances for Manchester City, scoring 95 goals and providing 45 assists. He leaves Arsenal with 32 goals and 22 assists from 123 matches.
Barcelona did not get Julián Álvarez. They have instead signed someone considerably cheaper, more experienced and carrying a much larger question mark. Gabriel Jesus has a contract until 2029, the number 9 shirt and an opportunity to rebuild his career.
A guaranteed place in the starting eleven was not included.
