Mourinho reaches out to Pellegrini after 16 years of tension
José Mourinho admitted regretting his old comments about Manuel Pellegrini, praised the Betis coach and promised a hug at their reunion.
José Mourinho used his press conference before Real Madrid’s meeting with Real Betis to address a dispute dating back to his first spell at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Portuguese coach admitted that he had made unnecessary remarks about Manuel Pellegrini and said he was not proud of them.
Mourinho did not present the episode as a misunderstanding or divide the blame between both managers. He accepted that the comments had come from him and described some of them as “very stupid”.
He also said he intended to greet Pellegrini with a hug before and after their meeting at Estadio La Cartuja. It was a notably conciliatory intervention from a coach whose first period in Madrid was often defined by confrontation. Mourinho remains direct, but on this occasion he used the press room to close an argument rather than create one.
THE DISPUTE BEGAN AFTER MADRID CHANGED COACHES
Pellegrini managed Real Madrid during the 2009/10 season. His team collected 96 league points but finished without a trophy, and the Chilean was replaced by Mourinho after one year. Pellegrini subsequently took charge of Málaga.
In 2011, Mourinho said that if Real Madrid dismissed him, he would not go on to coach Málaga and would instead seek a major job in England or Italy. The remark was widely understood as a slight against his predecessor.
Their relationship remained cool when their careers later crossed in the Premier League. The tension was occasionally visible on the touchline and became part of the public story surrounding the two coaches.
Mourinho has now revisited those comments without trying to justify them. He explained that a long career inevitably contains words and actions that look very different with the benefit of time. In this case, he made clear that the responsibility was his.
That distinction matters. He did not hide behind the familiar language of media exaggeration. He acknowledged that he had gone too far.
PRAISE FOR PELLEGRINI’S CONDUCT
Mourinho also recalled a 2021 friendly between Real Betis and Roma. His side finished the match severely depleted after a string of cards, but Pellegrini reportedly instructed his players not to humiliate their opponents. Betis won the game 5-2.
The Real Madrid coach described Pellegrini as a gentleman and praised him as an example both professionally and personally.
Mourinho then lightened the mood by referring to Manchester City’s 2014 Premier League title. His Chelsea team defeated Liverpool during the run-in, helping Pellegrini’s City move towards the championship. Mourinho joked that he had therefore repaid the Chilean rather well for his earlier comments.
Pellegrini responded without reopening the dispute. The Betis manager said he had always held Mourinho in high regard as a coach and argued that the media had built up a confrontation that he never felt existed to the same degree. He also said Mourinho now appeared more mature and measured in the way he speaks.
A CALMER VERSION OF MOURINHO
Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid naturally revived memories of his first spell: fierce press conferences, constant battles and a manager who could control the entire news cycle with one sentence. His second tenure has so far carried a different tone.
The authority has not disappeared. Neither has the demanding personality. What appears to have changed is Mourinho’s willingness to decide which confrontations are worth pursuing and which ones should be left behind.
His words about Pellegrini offered a clear example. Mourinho did not erase the past or pretend the remarks had never been made. He returned to them himself, accepted responsibility and spoke warmly about a respected opponent.
That is a constructive development for Real Madrid. The club needs a coach capable of defending the team and setting strict standards, but it does not benefit from every old disagreement being dragged into a new season. Mourinho can still dominate a press conference. This time, he used that ability to settle unfinished business.
The two coaches were expected to embrace before the match at La Cartuja. After 16 years of tension, that simple gesture carried more weight than another exchange of public remarks.
