Simeone gives Álvarez another chance after Barcelona saga
Diego Simeone has confirmed Julián Álvarez’s return to Atlético’s squad for the Athletic Club match after a summer dominated by Barcelona speculation.
Barcelona dominated the discussion around Julián Álvarez throughout the summer, but the transfer window closed without a move. The striker remains an Atlético Madrid player, and Diego Simeone is now trying to turn weeks of tension into something useful on the pitch. Álvarez has returned to the squad and will travel to Bilbao for the match against Athletic Club.
ÁLVAREZ RETURNS TO THE SQUAD
Simeone confirmed at his press conference that Álvarez will be included in Atlético’s squad for Saturday’s La Liga fixture at San Mamés. The coach said the forward has been working well and is ready to rejoin the group.
“He is training very well. He will be called up and will travel with the team to Bilbao,” Simeone said.
The decision follows a difficult end to the summer window. Atlético said Álvarez missed three group sessions because of an indisposition. He later trained individually and was left out of the squad for the 3-1 victory over Sevilla.
He is now returning, although not in the direction discussed for most of the summer. Barcelona remained the possible destination in the headlines. Bilbao is the journey that has actually been confirmed.
BARCELONA INTEREST PRODUCED NO TRANSFER
Reuters reported that Barcelona were pursuing Álvarez, while the player had spoken during the World Cup about wanting to fulfil his dream of playing for the Catalan club. Atlético maintained a firm position, with chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín publicly ruling out selling the forward to Barcelona.
There was no confirmed agreement between the clubs, and the interest never became a completed transfer. The window closed with Álvarez still under contract at Atlético and Simeone responsible for managing the consequences.
Barcelona once again spent much of the summer attached to a major attacking target. The story offered ambition, expectation and daily updates. What it did not produce was the player. Atlético kept its forward, while Álvarez was left needing to repair his position in Madrid.
SIMEONE WANTS LESS JUDGEMENT
The Atlético coach avoided attacking Álvarez publicly. Instead, he described the situation as an opportunity for the player to learn, resolve personal matters and regain his happiness.
“Life is full of opportunities,” Simeone said. “We should judge less and focus more on learning.”
Simeone added that Atlético want Álvarez to feel settled and start scoring again. Club legend Paulo Futre had delivered a similar message of support to the striker before the press conference.
The coach did not claim that every disagreement had disappeared. His message was more practical. Álvarez is training properly, he is back in the squad and Atlético are prepared to give him a route back into the team.
THE RESPONSE MUST COME ON THE PITCH
According to “El País”, Álvarez has shown greater intensity and involvement in Atlético’s recent training sessions. He may still begin the match at San Mamés on the bench, with Simeone considering the same starting structure that worked in the victory over Sevilla.
A place in the travelling squad therefore does not guarantee an immediate return to the starting XI. The forward must earn his sporting position again and rebuild his relationship with supporters after being whistled during the earlier match against Villarreal.
The summer discussion was shaped by Barcelona, transfer speculation and Álvarez’s stated dream. Once the window closed, the situation became much simpler. He must train, take his opportunity and answer on the pitch. Simeone has offered him that chance.
