Araújo earns rave reviews as Liverpool consider Barcelona’s €55m option
Ronald Araújo won nine of ten duels and helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet as British outlets discussed the reported €55 million purchase option.
Ronald Araújo made his first Premier League start for Liverpool and immediately reminded everyone why he was once regarded as one of Barcelona’s most valuable defenders. The Uruguayan won nine of his ten duels, dominated in the air and helped Andoni Iraola’s side keep a clean sheet against Ipswich Town.
British outlets and Liverpool supporters are already discussing whether the club should make the move permanent. Barcelona can hardly complain about the conversation. They loaned out one of their captains and reportedly gave Liverpool control of the next step.
AN IMPRESSIVE FIRST PREMIER LEAGUE START
Araújo started at right-back as Liverpool secured a 2–0 victory at Portman Road. Alexander Isak scored both goals inside the opening nine minutes, allowing the visitors to manage the rest of the game from a comfortable position.
Opta’s figures underline Araújo’s contribution. He won nine of ten duels, completed a perfect six from six in aerial contests and registered seven clearances. He led or jointly led the match in those defensive categories.
Liverpool also recorded their first clean sheet of the season after consecutive 2–2 draws against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest. Araújo had been brought into a defence lacking stability. On his first league start, he supplied it.
PRAISE FROM THE MEDIA AND SUPPORTERS
Sports Illustrated gave Araújo a 7.7 rating and highlighted his strength in duels, particularly in the air. The outlet suggested his performance could place pressure on Jeremie Frimpong in the competition for Liverpool’s right-back position.
Dean Ashton went further on talkSPORT, selecting Araújo as his standout player despite Isak scoring both goals. This Is Anfield also collected positive reactions from supporters, several of whom described the defender as outstanding and called for him to retain his place.
Live4Liverpool has already argued that the club should consider activating the reported purchase option. That is an opinion rather than Liverpool’s official position, and one strong performance does not settle a transfer. It does, however, show how quickly perceptions have changed around a player who struggled to secure a regular starting place at Barcelona.
THE €55M DECISION BELONGS TO LIVERPOOL
Liverpool officially signed Araújo on loan for the 2026/27 season. British reports state that the agreement contains an option to buy worth approximately €55 million, or just over £47 million.
It is an option, not an obligation. Barcelona are not guaranteed to receive the money, while Liverpool remain free to decide whether the permanent transfer makes sense.
Should Araújo maintain this level, the fixed price could begin to look increasingly attractive. Barcelona would not be able to reassess his value after a strong season and demand a larger fee if Liverpool exercise the reported option under the agreed terms.
BARCELONA CREATED THIS SITUATION
Araújo remains under contract with Barcelona until 2031, but he made only 11 league starts last season as Hansi Flick preferred other defensive combinations.
The loan offered him regular football and removed his salary from Barcelona’s budget for the season. So far, the sporting benefits have been most visible in England. Araújo has played, won and earned immediate praise after helping Liverpool produce the defensive performance they had been missing.
Barcelona may eventually present a €55 million sale as a successful piece of business. That argument would be easier to accept if Araújo does not develop into a central figure at Anfield. If he does, the club will have to explain why it allowed a European rival to restore the value of its captain before deciding whether to purchase him at a price fixed in advance.
