Barcelona have €60 million of room, but another stadium move complicates the decision
Barcelona reportedly have €60 million of room in LaLiga’s squad-cost limit and must decide whether to use it in January or preserve part for next season.
Financial good news at Barcelona rarely arrives without a footnote. According to „Sport”, the club finished the summer window with approximately €60 million of unused room in LaLiga’s squad-cost limit. That figure, however, should not be mistaken for cash available to spend on transfers.
The limit covers the annual cost of the squad, including wages, bonuses and transfer-fee amortisation. Barcelona may therefore have room to register new contracts in January, but it does not follow that the club can simply spend €60 million on a player without creating costs for future seasons.
THE €60 MILLION IS NOT CASH
If Barcelona signed a player for €50 million on a five-year contract, the transfer fee would generally be divided across the length of the deal for accounting purposes. The annual amortisation would be €10 million, with the player’s salary and other contractual costs added to the calculation.
That would make a January signing possible within the reported margin, but the same operation would continue to consume space in subsequent seasons. Barcelona have gained flexibility, not a free shopping allowance.
„Sport” also reports that the club can preserve unused room for next season. Under the mechanism described by the newspaper, only 75% of the reserved amount would be added to the following campaign’s limit. Saving the entire €60 million would therefore leave Barcelona with approximately €45 million of additional room.
The report says the club would need to make that choice before the winter window opens. Neither Barcelona nor LaLiga has officially announced how much unused capacity the club currently possesses or confirmed what the board intends to do with it.
THE STADIUM RETURNS TO THE EQUATION
The continuing redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou makes the decision more complicated. Work on the stadium’s roof is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027 and could force the first team to relocate temporarily once again.
Playing away from the club’s largest stadium would reduce matchday income, which could then affect Barcelona’s squad-cost limit. Spending the available room in January would provide an immediate sporting benefit, but it would also create expenses during a season in which revenue may be lower.
The venue itself has not been confirmed. Joan Laporta previously discussed expanding Estadi Johan Cruyff and said Barcelona did not want to return to Montjuïc. More recent reports have again presented Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys as a possible home for part of the 2027/28 campaign.
Barcelona are therefore considering their financial options while the stadium plan continues to move around with the furniture.
FINANCIAL NORMALITY, WITH CONDITIONS
Having €60 million of reported room is clearly better than beginning another registration race with no margin at all. It does not mean that Barcelona suddenly have an unrestricted transfer budget.
The board must decide whether the squad requires another investment in January or whether preserving part of the limit would offer greater protection next season. Using the room now creates future costs. Saving it reportedly means losing 25% of the unused amount.
Barcelona have finally secured some breathing space. The problem is that the Spotify Camp Nou roof is already casting a shadow over what they can do with it.
