Lamine Yamal targets the Champions League again after three painful exits
Lamine Yamal remains determined to win the Champions League with Barcelona after three painful eliminations against PSG, Inter and Atlético Madrid.
Barcelona are beginning another Champions League campaign with Lamine Yamal once again placed at the centre of the story. AS has revisited the 19-year-old’s previous promise that he would not stop until the trophy returned to Barcelona.
This is not a fresh statement made ahead of the new campaign. It is a promise Yamal delivered after earlier European eliminations and one that has now resurfaced as Barcelona prepare for another attempt. The ambition is clear, the promotional face has been chosen and much of the pressure has once again landed on a teenager.
THREE CAMPAIGNS AND THREE PAINFUL EXITS
Yamal’s first Champions League journey ended in the 2023/24 quarter-finals. Barcelona won 3-2 away to Paris Saint-Germain and extended their aggregate lead when Raphinha finished a move created by the young winger in the return leg.
Ronald Araújo was then sent off, PSG took control and Barcelona lost 4-1 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate. A tie that had appeared to be under control collapsed after one decisive moment.
Barcelona went further in 2024/25, only to suffer an even more dramatic ending. Their semi-final against Inter produced 13 goals across two matches. The first leg finished 3-3 before Inter won the return 4-3 after extra time, progressing 7-6 on aggregate.
Yamal scored a superb goal in the opening game and remained Barcelona’s biggest threat in Milan. After the elimination, he assured supporters that he would fulfil his promise and bring the trophy back to the club.
The third attempt ended against Atlético Madrid in April 2026. Barcelona travelled to the second leg facing a 2-0 deficit. They won 2-1, with Yamal among the scorers, but Atlético survived the comeback and advanced 3-2 on aggregate.
THE PROMISE RETURNED AFTER ATLÉTICO
A day after that defeat, Yamal addressed supporters through his official Instagram account. He admitted Barcelona had given everything without doing enough to qualify, insisted that giving up was not an option and repeated his belief that the trophy would eventually return to the city.
His contribution in the competition is already substantial. Official UEFA figures credit Yamal with 33 Champions League appearances, 11 goals and nine assists. Those numbers would be impressive for an established forward, never mind a player born in 2007.
Barcelona, meanwhile, have not won the tournament since 2015. Coaches, directors, transfer strategies and presidential promises have changed repeatedly during those 11 years. The latest European revival is increasingly being presented through Yamal’s image and words.
A 19-YEAR-OLD CANNOT BE THE ENTIRE PLAN
There is nothing wrong with Yamal’s ambition. His response to painful defeats shows responsibility and attachment to the club. The concern is how conveniently Barcelona can turn a young player’s promise into the answer to every question about their repeated failures in Europe.
Yamal can score, create chances and decide major matches. He cannot build the squad, solve defensive weaknesses or correct decisions made above the coaching staff. The Champions League will not return simply because the same emotional promise is repeated before another campaign.
Barcelona possess a player capable of delivering his share. The club must now give him a team strong enough to survive the moments when talent and optimism are no longer sufficient.
