Courtois returns to the elite shortlist with Yashin Trophy nomination
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is among the ten nominees for the 2026 Yashin Trophy and could reclaim the award he won in 2022.
Thibaut Courtois has been named among the ten nominees for the 2026 Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, traditionally known as the Yashin Trophy. The recognition underlines the Belgian’s enduring importance to Real Madrid and his continued place among the leading goalkeepers in world football.
THE 2022 WINNER IS BACK IN CONTENTION
Courtois previously lifted the Yashin Trophy in 2022 after playing a decisive role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League triumphs. His performance against Liverpool in the European final remains one of the defining displays of his career.
This year’s nomination is based on more recent achievements. The evaluation period runs from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026 and includes performances at the 2026 World Cup.
Courtois played six matches and completed 551 minutes for Belgium at the tournament. He made 14 saves as his country reached the quarter-finals. According to the official Ballon d’Or website, his 34 completed long passes were the highest total among the goalkeepers included in its World Cup analysis.
TEN GOALKEEPERS MAKE THE SHORTLIST
Courtois is joined by Yassine Bounou, Joan García, Gregor Kobel, Emiliano Martínez, Édouard Mendy, David Raya, Matvey Safonov, Unai Simón and Vozinha.
There is considerable competition. Simón won the Golden Glove after Spain’s World Cup triumph, while Martínez has already collected the Yashin Trophy twice. The nomination therefore does not make Courtois an automatic favourite, but it does confirm that his standing has remained intact.
That is especially significant after the serious knee injury that previously kept him out for most of a season. Courtois returned without losing the calmness, positioning and ability to make decisive saves that have defined his best years in Madrid.
For Real Madrid, his value goes beyond spectacular interventions. He gives the defenders in front of him confidence, controls his penalty area and has repeatedly delivered when matches have reached their most demanding moments.
THE WINNER WILL BE REVEALED IN LONDON
The award will be presented at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on 26 October. It will be the first edition of the event held in the British capital.
Courtois will have to overcome nine accomplished rivals if he is to reclaim the trophy. Regardless of the final vote, his latest nomination provides another clear measure of his consistency and longevity at the highest level.
