First team win 5-1, U19s lose 2-1 as Feyenoord spoil Barcelona’s academy postcard
Barcelona’s first team beat Feyenoord 5-1, but the U19 side lost 2-1 in its opening UEFA Youth League match at Estadi Johan Cruyff.
Barcelona’s senior side swept Feyenoord aside 5-1 in the Champions League. The following morning, the club’s U19 team lost 2-1 to Feyenoord’s youngsters in its UEFA Youth League opener. The picture-perfect European narrative lasted one night.
The academy fixture at Estadi Johan Cruyff had originally been scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed because of a severe-weather and heavy-rain warning. When the teams finally met on Thursday morning, Feyenoord needed only 23 minutes to establish a two-goal lead.
TWO MISTAKES, TWO GOALS
Jivayno Zinhagel opened the scoring in the ninth minute after capitalising on an error by Joan Inglès. Feyenoord struck again in the 23rd minute when Barcelona were punished during a defensive transition. Jerayno Schaken, who has already made his senior debut for the Rotterdam club, finished the move.
Pol Planas’ side saw plenty of the ball but could not match the visitors’ efficiency. Feyenoord converted its first two opportunities, while Óscar Gistau and Nil Vicens both hit the woodwork. The football was often promising; the finishing was considerably less decorative.
BARCELONA’S LATE PUSH FALLS SHORT
The hosts were handed a route back into the contest when Nuhu Fofana was fouled inside the penalty area. Vicens converted the resulting spot kick in the 77th minute to make it 2-1.
Levi Haps then received his second yellow card, leaving Feyenoord to defend the closing stages with ten players. Barcelona applied sustained pressure but could not find an equaliser. Inglès had a final opportunity to redeem his earlier mistake in the 95th minute, only to send his effort over the crossbar.
ONE BADGE, TWO VERY DIFFERENT RESULTS
The contrast with the senior fixture was impossible to miss. Barcelona’s first team had beaten Feyenoord 5-1 at Spotify Camp Nou, with Raphinha scoring twice and Karim Adeyemi, Lamine Yamal and Gabriel Jesus also finding the net. A few hours later, the U19s opened their European campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Feyenoord’s academy side.
That result should not become a verdict on a group of developing players. The UEFA Youth League is part of their education, and mistakes belong to that process. It does, however, disturb the polished story in which every La Masia prospect is immediately presented as a finished star. Development takes more than a famous badge and an enthusiastic promotional campaign.
