Unwanted yesterday, “one of ours” again today: Barcelona rediscover Araújo
Ronald Araújo delivered a backheel assist in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid, prompting renewed attention on his Barcelona connection.
Ronald Araújo produced a clever backheel assist as Liverpool defeated Atlético Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League. One polished touch was apparently enough to make his Barcelona connection fashionable again. Only weeks earlier, the priority had been to remove his salary from the books and make room in the squad. After his encouraging start in England, the Barça-friendly media environment is once again eager to highlight where he developed.
Barcelona have not issued an official statement praising Araújo’s performance. The shift is visible in the wider narrative around the club. When a former player struggles, the problem belongs to his new employer. When he succeeds, there is suddenly room for a reminder about his Catalan education.
ONE BACKHEEL CHANGES THE STORY
Liverpool beat Atlético Madrid 2-1, with Araújo directly involved in the hosts’ opening goal. His improvised backheel created the opportunity for Dominik Szoboszlai to score, before Alexis Mac Allister delivered the winner after half-time.
Deployed at right-back, the Uruguayan also produced a composed defensive performance. Andoni Iraola praised his work without the ball and stressed that his attacking contribution can be underestimated. It was another positive appearance for a player who has quickly received minutes and confidence in his new surroundings.
Araújo said the change had been good for him and explained that the manager encourages him to attack. That was enough for a player recently discussed mainly as someone Barcelona needed to move on to be wrapped in blaugrana colours once again.
NO LOAN FEE, BUT THE WAGES DISAPPEARED
Liverpool signed Araújo on a season-long loan without paying a loan fee. The English club are covering his full salary, while the agreement contains an option to buy worth approximately €55 million. It is an option, not an obligation, so Barcelona cannot treat that money as guaranteed income.
The structure of the deal made the immediate priority rather clear. Barcelona received no loan payment but removed Araújo’s wages from their budget. The defender also reportedly accepted a pay cut to facilitate the move. His contract with Barcelona still runs until 2031.
Araújo started only 11 LaLiga matches last season, and his sporting role had clearly diminished. Barcelona preferred other combinations in central defence. The exit door was opened quickly; whether Liverpool eventually pay to close the deal remains a question for next summer.
BARCELONA DEVELOPED HIM, BUT HE WAS NOT RAISED AT LA MASIA
Araújo joined Barcelona B from Boston River in 2018, when he was 19. Barcelona played a major part in his development, but describing him as a conventional La Masia graduate would erase the beginning of his career in Uruguay.
The player himself has shown no desire to rewrite that history. After leaving for England, he spoke warmly about Barcelona and credited the club with helping him become the footballer he is today. Araújo’s message has remained consistent. The public narrative around him has been rather more flexible.
FERRAN TORRES RETURNS TO THE FAMILY ALBUM TOO
The same night also produced another opportunity for Barcelona-themed nostalgia. Former Barça forward Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain defeated Slovan Bratislava 6-1. Ousmane Dembélé added two goals and Fabián Ruiz scored the other.
Barcelona cannot claim ownership of those performances. The surrounding media machine can still apply its familiar rule: a poor display after departure belongs entirely to the new club, while every success comes with a convenient reminder of the player’s Barcelona past.
One assist does not define Araújo’s season, and it certainly does not guarantee that Liverpool will exercise their purchase option. It does, however, show how quickly the framing can change. The distance between “surplus to requirements” and “our former player shining in England” was one backheel.
