One Barcelona goal and Jesus is already alongside Rivaldo
Gabriel Jesus scored in Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Feyenoord to reach 27 Champions League goals and draw level with Rivaldo.
Gabriel Jesus needed only a couple of minutes to score his first goal for FC Barcelona. The Brazilian completed the 5-1 victory over Feyenoord before quickly finding himself surrounded by the first historic comparison of his new career: he is now level with Rivaldo on 27 Champions League goals. The statistic is accurate. Barcelona’s contribution to it currently stands at one.
AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT FROM THE BENCH
Jesus began the Champions League opener among the substitutes and replaced Dani Olmo late in the game. Around two minutes after coming on, he met Lamine Yamal’s delivery and headed past Tjark Ernst to score Barcelona’s fifth goal.
It was his first goal for the club and completed a convincing 5-1 win at Spotify Camp Nou. Jesus almost added another in stoppage time, only for his header to strike the crossbar.
There is no reason to diminish his contribution. He was given limited time, attacked the right space and finished his opportunity. It was exactly the type of impact Barcelona wanted from their new striker.
THE RIVALDO NUMBER NEEDS CONTEXT
The goal took Jesus to 27 in the Champions League, drawing him level with Rivaldo as the joint fourth-highest-scoring Brazilian in the competition’s history.
Neymar leads the list with 43 goals, followed by Vinícius Júnior on 34 and Kaká on 30. Jesus and Rivaldo share fourth place, while Rodrygo follows with 26.
That is an impressive career record, although it is not a Barcelona record. Jesus scored 26 of those goals while playing in England for Manchester City and Arsenal. His header against Feyenoord represents the club’s first contribution to a total built over several seasons.
ONE GAME, ONE GOAL, ONE HISTORIC HEADLINE
Barcelona’s official report simply celebrated the forward’s first goal and the 5-1 result. The comparison with Rivaldo emerged in the coverage that followed. The number is genuine, but presenting it as an instant Barcelona milestone leaves out most of the journey.
None of that is the player’s fault. Jesus did not declare himself Rivaldo’s successor or pretend that one late goal had transformed his status at the club. He came on, converted Yamal’s cross and helped complete a comfortable victory.
After one appearance, Barcelona have their first goal from Jesus, the striker has moved up an all-time Brazilian ranking, and the surrounding narrative already has a legend in the headline. Efficiency is clearly not limited to the penalty area.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT MATTERS MORE
Scoring 27 goals in 55 Champions League appearances is a serious achievement. Jesus has earned his place among the competition’s most productive Brazilian forwards through his work at several clubs.
His Barcelona career, however, has only just started. The header in the 5-1 win over Feyenoord was a promising first step, not proof that the club has discovered a new Rivaldo. Further goals and a regular role under Hansi Flick will determine what this chapter becomes. The first grand comparison required considerably less time.
