Laporta calls for calm and immediately targets every trophy
Joan Laporta urged caution after Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Feyenoord before naming four major trophies as the club’s objectives.
Joan Laporta attempted to cool the excitement surrounding Barcelona’s excellent start to the season. His caution lasted only a few sentences. After insisting that the campaign had barely begun, the club president named La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and the Champions League as Barcelona’s objectives.
At Barcelona, keeping both feet on the ground apparently still leaves enough room to carry plans for every available trophy.
Laporta spoke on 11 September during the club’s traditional floral tribute at the monument to Rafael Casanova, held as part of Catalonia’s National Day celebrations. He was asked about Hansi Flick’s team following their impressive opening weeks, including the 5-1 victory over Feyenoord in Barcelona’s first Champions League match of the season.
CAUTION WITH A FOUR-TROPHY TARGET
The president initially delivered a measured message. He stressed that the season had only just started and said Barcelona’s performances had to remain driven by hard work, intensity and commitment. He also praised the players’ attitude and backed Lamine Yamal’s observation that a team cannot win without running.
For a moment, it sounded like Laporta was trying to stop the early-season celebration from getting out of hand. He then produced a complete list of the trophies Barcelona intend to win.
Laporta said the club considers itself capable of competing for major honours. He identified La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and the Champions League as this season’s goals, adding that Barcelona feel particularly excited about the European competition.
There is nothing unusual about a club of Barcelona’s size aiming high. The amusing part was how quickly a call for restraint turned into a four-trophy mission statement. The journey from “this has only just begun” to “we are going for everything” required no more than a single answer.
DECO’S SQUAD RECEIVES ANOTHER ENDORSEMENT
Laporta also praised the construction of the squad. He described it as competitive and well balanced, claiming that Flick effectively has two strong teams available to him. In the president’s view, the level of internal competition means every player must remain focused because nobody can afford to relax.
He credited Deco for creating that situation. Laporta believes the sporting director has assembled a group with enough quality and depth to maintain competition across the team. It was another public endorsement of Deco at a time when the board has been eager to present the current squad as proof of a job exceptionally well done.
The 5-1 win against Feyenoord certainly gave Barcelona reasons to be confident. Flick’s side have started the campaign with goals, energy and convincing results. It is still September, however, which was precisely Laporta’s original point before he unveiled a plan covering every major competition.
Barcelona must therefore stay humble, keep running and avoid looking too far ahead—all while trying to collect four trophies along the way.
