Mbappé answers his critics: “A player who scores will never be a problem”
Kylian Mbappé responds to criticism of his defensive contribution and rejects claims that his goals could become a problem for Real Madrid.
Kylian Mbappé has addressed criticism of his defensive work and overall contribution to Real Madrid’s collective game. The French forward accepts that constructive analysis is part of football, but rejects the suggestion that his goals could somehow become a problem for the team.
Speaking to “France Football”, Mbappé returned to the sport’s most basic principle: teams need goals to win matches and trophies.
FIVE GOALS IN FIVE MATCHES
At the time excerpts from the interview were released, Mbappé had scored five goals in his opening five appearances of the season—four in La Liga and one in the Champions League.
Despite that return, discussions around the forward continued to focus on his defensive runs, distance covered and influence without the ball. Mbappé believes the assessment can become unbalanced because his attacking quality is now treated as something routine.
After spending years at the highest level, his goals no longer surprise everyone. A missed pressing run, meanwhile, can generate an entire debate. That is one of the consequences of being Real Madrid’s leading attacking figure.
WHEN SCORING BECOMES THE ACCUSATION
Mbappé was particularly direct when responding to claims that his individual output might damage the team. He pointed out that if he stopped scoring, the same observers would immediately demand an explanation.
“A player who scores will never be a problem in a team,” Mbappé said, adding that he had never seen a side win trophies by scoring no goals.
His argument does not mean that forwards should be exempt from tactical analysis. Nor did he claim that pressing, positioning and defensive effort are irrelevant. The Frenchman’s objection concerns the attempt to portray his greatest strength—deciding matches through goals—as a liability for Real Madrid.
That distinction matters. A team can demand more collective work from every player while still recognising the enormous value of an elite finisher. Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive.
CONSTRUCTIVE AND “MORE FOOLISH” CRITICISM
Mbappé explained that he has developed a balanced relationship with criticism. He separates constructive observations from comments he considers less reasonable and refuses to let outside noise dictate his decisions.
There is nothing unusual about examining his work without the ball. However, presenting a prolific scorer as a problem precisely because of his goals moves the discussion away from serious tactical analysis.
Mbappé’s response was firm without denying the collective demands of playing for Real Madrid. Five goals in five matches also gave him a powerful piece of evidence: whatever else can be improved, his primary contribution remains both visible and decisive.
