Mourinho takes a swipe at referees: “Unity is strength”
José Mourinho reacted to the CTA’s explanation of the penalty incident involving Kylian Mbappé during Real Madrid’s 1–0 defeat to Real Betis.
José Mourinho has responded to the Spanish Technical Committee of Referees after it backed the VAR decision made during Real Madrid’s defeat to Real Betis. The Portuguese coach avoided a direct accusation, but his final remark left little room for doubt: “Unity is strength.”
THE CTA BACKED THE VAR DECISION
The controversy came in the closing stages of Real Madrid’s 1–0 defeat to Real Betis. Madrid were awarded a penalty after Natan fouled Vinícius Júnior, but Álvaro Valles saved Kylian Mbappé’s effort before Marc Bartra cleared the rebound.
Madrid questioned Bartra’s position when the penalty was taken. The Technical Committee of Referees later stated that VAR had been correct not to order a retake. According to its explanation, Bartra had one foot touching the ground outside the penalty area while his other foot was in the air, meaning his position was legal under the Laws of the Game.
MOURINHO DELIVERS HIS MESSAGE
Mourinho was asked about that explanation during his press conference ahead of the match against Rayo Vallecano. He said the CTA’s position did not surprise him, highlighting the solidarity and institutional protection that exists among referees.
The Real Madrid coach added that officials very rarely criticise another referee’s decision. He then completed his answer with a pointed line: “Unity is strength.”
There was no direct allegation against the CTA, but the irony was unmistakable. Mourinho did not need a lengthy complaint. A calm reference to refereeing solidarity was enough to make his position perfectly clear.
MADRID TURN THEIR ATTENTION TO RAYO
Mourinho also stressed that his squad is happy, united and working well. Following the defeat at Betis, the home fixture against Rayo Vallecano gives Real Madrid an immediate opportunity to respond on the pitch.
The penalty debate has nevertheless remained part of the build-up. The CTA offered its technical interpretation, while Mourinho provided a characteristically sharp reminder of how rarely refereeing bodies publicly disagree with their own officials.
