Barcelona celebrate another Gabriel Jesus “achievement” after contributing one goal to it
Gabriel Jesus scored his first Barcelona goal against Feyenoord and joined Rivaldo on 27 Champions League goals.
Gabriel Jesus needed only a few minutes against Feyenoord to open his FC Barcelona account. That one finish was quickly followed by another reason for celebration: the Brazilian moved level with Rivaldo as the joint-fourth highest-scoring Brazilian in Champions League history.
It sounds like another landmark created at Barcelona. There is a small detail, though. Of the 27 goals behind that impressive total, exactly one was scored for the Catalan club. Jesus brought the other 26 with him from England. Barcelona added the final line, while the coverage has already started to resemble a launch party for the entire story.
A FEW MINUTES WERE ENOUGH
Jesus replaced Dani Olmo late in Barcelona’s Champions League opener against Feyenoord. Two minutes later, he met Lamine Yamal’s delivery and completed the 5-1 victory. It was his first goal for the club, scored during his second appearance following the move from Arsenal.
The striker deserves credit. He had little time, found the right position and converted his opportunity. It was precisely the kind of impact expected from a number nine.
The exaggeration begins only when one successful cameo is divided into several separate historic achievements, each presented as another product of the new Barcelona chapter.
BARCELONA PROVIDED ONE OF THE 27 GOALS
The finish against Feyenoord took Jesus to 27 Champions League goals. Neymar leads the Brazilian ranking with 43, followed by Vini Jr. on 34 and Kaká on 30. Jesus now shares fourth place with Rivaldo, while Rodrygo sits immediately behind them with 26.
It is an excellent personal record, built over years at Manchester City and Arsenal. Barcelona have signed a striker with substantial Champions League experience; they have not created that European résumé within ten days.
That distinction should be simple enough. Still, considering how quickly every statistic from the Feyenoord match is being repackaged, it is probably worth making before all 26 of his previous goals are awarded honorary La Masia status.
LEVEL WITH RIVALDO, NOT YET AHEAD OF HIM
The ranking also needs one small clarification. Jesus has not moved past Rivaldo. The two Brazilians share fourth position with 27 goals each. One more finish would put the current Barcelona forward clear on his own.
That does not reduce the value of his achievement. Jesus has been an effective Champions League scorer for years, and Barcelona can now benefit from the experience accumulated during his time in England.
A STRONG START WITHOUT THE INSTANT LEGEND
Barcelona won 5-1 and their new striker scored shortly after leaving the bench. That is already a good story. There is no need to treat his entire career total as a fresh Barcelona record.
Jesus earned the praise for an excellent introduction at the Spotify Camp Nou. The club can also celebrate having one of the leading Brazilian scorers in Champions League history in its squad. His Barcelona record, however, still consists of one goal. A very promising one, but still one.
