Hervé Renard backs Mourinho’s plan for Diomande: “We have to be patient”
Hervé Renard has backed José Mourinho’s gradual integration of Yan Diomande, who has made five substitute appearances for Real Madrid.
Ivory Coast head coach Hervé Renard has backed José Mourinho’s handling of Yan Diomande at Real Madrid. The French coach believes the 19-year-old should be integrated gradually after arriving late in pre-season and entering one of the most competitive squads in European football.
RENARD: MOURINHO SAID EVERYTHING THAT NEEDED TO BE SAID
Diomande has appeared in five matches for Real Madrid so far, coming off the bench on each occasion. The winger received limited minutes against Espanyol, Málaga, Real Betis, Real Sociedad and Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Mourinho has repeatedly called for patience. The Portuguese coach explained that the Ivory Coast international joined the squad late, missed a full pre-season and needs time to adapt to a new tactical and physical environment.
Renard agrees with that assessment.
“Mourinho was not bluffing. He was very clear. We have to be patient with Diomande,” the Ivory Coast coach told Afrik-Foot.
THE TRANSFER FEE DOES NOT PICK THE TEAM
Real Madrid officially confirmed Diomande’s arrival from RB Leipzig and a contract running until 30 June 2033. The club did not disclose the transfer fee, although Afrik-Foot reports a fixed amount of €125 million with up to €15 million in bonuses.
Such figures inevitably create expectations, but Mourinho is refusing to let a reported price tag dictate his selection. Diomande will be given a larger role when he is physically and tactically ready, rather than simply because Madrid made a major investment in his potential.
That approach also protects the player. Instead of demanding immediate match-winning performances, Real Madrid are allowing him to learn his responsibilities and compete for a starting place on sporting merit.
MOURINHO RECEIVES FURTHER SUPPORT
Former Ivory Coast international Alain Gouaméné, who worked with the national team during the most recent World Cup, has also supported Mourinho’s approach. He pointed to Diomande’s limited experience in senior football and argued that placing the entire burden on him immediately would risk damaging his development.
Gradual integration should therefore not be interpreted as a lack of confidence. It is designed to give a highly rated young player the conditions to develop without being overwhelmed by expectations created by the transfer.
NO PUBLIC PROMISES BEFORE RAYO
Mourinho did not reveal whether Diomande would make his first start against Rayo Vallecano. He only indicated that the squad contains players capable of bringing fresh energy into the team.
Real Madrid are leaving the decision to their coach rather than allowing outside pressure to accelerate the process. Diomande must make the most of every opportunity, but he also has something young players rarely receive after an expensive transfer: a clear plan and a manager prepared to follow it.
