Flick cools the excitement as Barcelona target the Champions League
Hansi Flick warned Barcelona against losing their intensity while confirming that winning the Champions League is the team’s objective this season.
Five matches, five victories and an emphatic start to the season. Hansi Flick insists that nobody at Barcelona should be celebrating too early. A moment later, however, he sets the highest possible target: winning the Champions League.
That is calm, Barcelona-style. First comes the warning against complacency. Then comes the declaration that the biggest trophy in European club football is the objective.
FLICK WARNS AGAINST LOSING INTENSITY
Speaking before Barcelona’s away match against Levante, Flick admitted that he is very pleased with his team’s current level. The Catalans have won all five of their competitive fixtures this season and their attack has already produced a string of convincing performances.
The coach was not prepared to turn the press conference into an early celebration. He stressed that individual quality will count for little if the team stops playing with intensity, focus and energy.
“We are very happy to be playing at this level at this stage of the season, but we have to show it in every match. We know we have a lot of quality, but it only helps us when we maintain this intensity and remain focused and active,” Flick said.
The German also warned that a change in attitude could quickly send Barcelona in the wrong direction. The club are therefore enjoying their form while being extremely careful not to appear as though they are enjoying it too much.
THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE IS THE TARGET
Flick’s clearest declaration came when he was asked about the team’s ambitions. He said Barcelona want to win the Champions League this season and described lifting the trophy as a dream for the squad.
LaLiga has not been pushed aside. Flick added that winning the Spanish title for a third consecutive season would also be an incredible achievement. The plan is apparently to avoid euphoria while collecting the most important trophies available.
Barcelona know this routine well. Officially, the season is long, every opponent is dangerous and everything can change after one poor performance. At the same time, expectations have just received another healthy injection of air.
LEVANTE PROVIDE THE NEXT TEST
Flick also refused to underestimate Barcelona’s next opponents. He praised Levante’s organisation and attacking structure, describing Sunday’s match at the Estadi Ciutat de València as a useful test of his team’s current level.
The coach has a deeper squad than in previous seasons and may make changes after two matches in quick succession. He reminded his players that competition exists throughout the team and that rotations must be accepted.
No medals are being handed out yet, but the direction is clear. Barcelona must remain humble, keep winning, retain the Spanish title and finally conquer the Champions League. Fortunately, modesty survived the press conference.
