Real Madrid await Bernardo Silva’s best as Mourinho hands him a central role
José Mourinho reportedly sees Bernardo Silva as the key to improving Real Madrid’s build-up after the midfielder returned from suspension.
Bernardo Silva was not brought to Real Madrid merely to provide a few spectacular moments at the start of the season. The Portuguese midfielder has been given a more important assignment: controlling the tempo, improving the build-up and bringing order to the middle of the pitch. According to MARCA, José Mourinho considers him a key part of the solution, even if his first weeks in Madrid have been relatively quiet.
INTER EXPOSED THE MISSING CONTROL
Real Madrid defeated Inter in the Champions League, but the match also highlighted the team’s difficulty in managing possession and slowing the game down. Inter created enough danger to keep Thibaut Courtois busy, while Madrid’s forwards also passed up several opportunities.
Mourinho had to cope without the suspended Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler and Eduardo Camavinga. Trent Alexander-Arnold was pushed into midfield to support Federico Valverde during the build-up, but the adjustment failed to provide the desired control and is unlikely to become a regular solution.
MOURINHO IS WAITING FOR FULL FITNESS
MARCA reports that Mourinho expects Bernardo to take greater responsibility for progressing the ball and dictating Madrid’s rhythm. His technical profile gives the coach something different from the power and running provided by Valverde, Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Official club statistics show that Bernardo has played 205 minutes across four league appearances, starting twice. Mourinho had previously suggested that the midfielder returned from his summer break below the required physical level, which may help explain his limited involvement in recent matches.
There is no indication that the coach has lost confidence in him. The message is quite the opposite: Madrid are waiting for Bernardo to reach the condition required to lead the creative side of the midfield.
BERNARDO IS EXPECTED TO TAKE CONTROL
Real Madrid signed the experienced midfielder after his Manchester City contract expired. MARCA claims Mourinho’s personal call played an important role in his decision, with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid also interested in the Portuguese international.
The proposed division of responsibilities is clear. Güler is expected to remain closer to the opposition penalty area, where his vision and final pass can cause the most damage. Bernardo, meanwhile, can operate from a deeper position, connect defence with attack and provide composure when Madrid need to retain possession.
He has been included in the squad to face Rayo Vallecano after missing the Inter match through suspension. That does not guarantee him a place in the starting eleven, but Mourinho has recovered a player whose experience and technical intelligence could significantly expand Madrid’s options in midfield.
