Real Madrid refuse to wait as Courtois extension moves closer
Real Madrid and Thibaut Courtois are reportedly close to agreeing a contract extension that would keep the Belgian goalkeeper at the club until June 2028.
Real Madrid are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Thibaut Courtois over a contract extension until June 30, 2028. According to AS, talks have entered an advanced stage, although the new deal has not yet been signed or officially announced.
MADRID ARE READY TO CHANGE THEIR USUAL APPROACH
Courtois’ current contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. Real Madrid have generally waited until the latter stages of a campaign before deciding the futures of veteran players, often limiting extensions to one year at a time.
The club are not expected to follow that timeline with Courtois. Madrid’s hierarchy believe the goalkeeper has already done enough to justify an early decision and see no reason to create uncertainty around such an important position.
HIS PERFORMANCES CONTINUE TO MAKE THE CASE
The Belgian remains Real Madrid’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. His seven saves in the 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter provided another reminder of his importance to the team.
José Mourinho has also expressed complete confidence in Courtois. The club’s assessment of the goalkeeping market has reportedly produced the same conclusion: there is no available option who would represent a clear sporting upgrade while the current No. 1 continues to perform at this level.
COURTOIS WANTS TO REMAIN IN MADRID
AS reports that approaches from clubs operating in wealthier markets have been rejected. Courtois wants to continue at Real Madrid and has previously spoken about his ambition to finish his career at the club.
He has also acknowledged that Madrid will eventually have to prepare for life without him. For now, however, neither side appears interested in bringing that transition forward unnecessarily.
THE SUCCESSION PLAN IS STILL BEING DEVELOPED
Keeping Courtois beyond 2027 would not prevent Madrid from preparing for the future. Several young goalkeepers are highly regarded within the academy, while Andriy Lunin continues to provide experienced and reliable cover.
Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has reportedly been offered to Madrid and has been monitored by the club. That interest has not developed into negotiations, with an external signing considered unnecessary while Courtois remains the clear first choice.
CLOSE DOES NOT YET ME COMPLETED
The report describes an agreement as close, not final. Real Madrid have not announced an extension, and the deal should not be treated as official until the relevant documents have been signed.
The direction of the talks is nevertheless clear. Madrid want Courtois to remain until 2028, the goalkeeper wants to stay, and his performances continue to support the club’s decision. In this case, acting early would protect both sporting stability and one of the strongest positions in Mourinho’s squad.
