Tension reportedly grows in France after Mbappé’s comments
Jérôme Rothen claims Dembélé was angered by Mbappé’s comments and says two camps are forming in France’s squad. The report remains unconfirmed.
Kylian Mbappé’s confident Ballon d’Or comments have triggered a heated debate in France. Jérôme Rothen claims Ousmane Dembélé took the Real Madrid forward’s words personally and that two camps are forming within the national team. For now, however, this remains a media report rather than a confirmed dressing-room dispute.
ROTHEN CLAIMS TWO CAMPS ARE FORMING
During an interview with “L’Équipe”, Mbappé compared the way he and Dembélé had been viewed throughout their careers. He said Dembélé had always been regarded as an exceptionally talented player, while he himself had consistently carried the label of “the chosen one”.
Rothen believes Dembélé was angered by those remarks. The former France international also claimed that people close to the Paris Saint-Germain player, as well as some members of the national-team dressing room, did not understand Mbappé’s choice of words. He went as far as describing the situation as “a form of betrayal” and suggested that two sides had emerged.
Those are serious claims, but they come from a commentator citing his information about the dressing room. Neither Dembélé nor the French Football Federation has publicly confirmed such a split.
DEMBÉLÉ DELIVERS HIS OWN MESSAGE
After Paris Saint-Germain’s latest match, Dembélé was again asked about the Ballon d’Or. He said he had never been viewed as “the chosen one”, stressing instead that he had worked hard throughout his career without constantly speaking about it.
Several French outlets interpreted the answer as a response to Mbappé. Dembélé did not mention the France captain by name, however, and did not publicly confirm any disagreement between them.
CONFIDENCE SHOULD NOT BE MISTAKEN FOR AN ATTACK
In the widely discussed passage, Mbappé did not question Dembélé’s quality or achievements. The Real Madrid star described his own career and made it clear that he considers himself a leading Ballon d’Or candidate. That level of confidence is hardly surprising from the captain of France and one of the most decisive players in world football.
The comments may have been received differently from how Mbappé intended them. Until either player or the federation addresses the matter, reports of a divided dressing room should be treated with caution. What can be said with certainty is that Mbappé’s directness has generated a much bigger controversy in France than the original remarks appeared to warrant.
