Two goals in 26 minutes. Carlos Espí is becoming Real Madrid’s late-game specialist
Carlos Espí scored Real Madrid’s late winner against Elche and now has two decisive goals from only 26 first-team minutes.
Carlos Espí has once again turned a brief substitute appearance into a Real Madrid victory. The young striker needed only four minutes on the pitch to score the decisive goal in the dramatic 3-2 win over Elche.
His first-team record is already unusual: two goals in 26 minutes, with both strikes directly securing three points for José Mourinho’s side.
FOUR MINUTES WERE ENOUGH
Mourinho introduced Espí in the 87th minute, shortly after Elche had completed their comeback from 2-0 down. He replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold as Madrid committed more players to attack in search of a winner.
The decisive move arrived in stoppage time. Jude Bellingham carried the ball forward before releasing Mbappé, who chose the pass instead of attempting to finish himself. Espí was waiting in front of goal and converted from close range to make it 3-2.
It was a remarkably productive cameo. The striker managed two attempts and scored the goal that prevented Madrid from dropping points after losing control of their two-goal advantage in the second half.
TWO GOALS, TWO VICTORIES
This was not the first time Espí had settled a league game late on. He also scored the winning goal against Espanyol on his official first-team debut.
After five short appearances, he has two goals from a combined 26 minutes of football. That works out at one goal every 13 minutes. More importantly, both goals changed a draw into a Real Madrid victory.
The sample is still too small for sweeping conclusions, but Espí has made excellent use of the limited opportunities Mourinho has given him. He has not played more than ten minutes in a single appearance, yet he has already delivered two decisive moments.
ANOTHER OPTION FOR MOURINHO
Espí does not need to become an immediate starter to earn an important role. A team competing across several competitions also needs players who can enter a match cold and quickly make their presence felt.
Mourinho now knows he has another penalty-box option when Madrid require a late goal. Espí has received very little playing time so far, but his response could hardly have been better: two chances to make the difference and two victories secured.
