240 Minutes and Still No Winner
José Mourinho has completed pre-season without naming Real Madrid’s first-choice right-back. It is not because neither candidate met his expectations. The Portuguese coach has two players offering very different strengths and appears unwilling to give up either option too early.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries both played exactly 240 minutes during the summer schedule. The Dutchman started three of Madrid’s four official friendlies, while the English defender started two. As they also spent significant time on the pitch together, those numbers provide no definitive answer before the competitive season begins.
The pair shared the field for 120 minutes. Mourinho used them together for the opening 75 minutes against Fiorentina and throughout the second half of the match against Deportivo La Coruña. Trent remained in the deeper defensive role, while Dumfries moved forward as a wing-back or winger.
Those were not the only experiments. Alexander-Arnold was also tested as the right-sided centre-back in a back three, giving him the freedom to begin attacks from a deeper position. Dumfries operated much higher up the pitch, where he could make use of his pace, power and ability to attack the penalty area.
Mourinho is therefore looking beyond the simple question of which player should start at right-back. He is also exploring how to use both men in the same team and change the formation without making a substitution. Trent can operate as an additional playmaker, while Dumfries adds direct running and another physical presence near the opposition goal.
The Dutch international arrived in Madrid after establishing himself as one of Inter Milan’s most important players. He did not make the move to quietly accept a place on the bench. Alexander-Arnold has just as much at stake. He was signed as Dani Carvajal’s long-term successor but must re-establish his position following an inconsistent first season.
Their competition could become particularly valuable during a demanding campaign. Dumfries may be better suited to matches requiring physical power and repeated runs into the box. Trent provides greater control in possession, accurate long-range passing and the ability to create from deep. Mourinho has two different tools rather than two players attempting to perform the same task.
The first answer may arrive on Saturday, 22 August, when Real Madrid begin their La Liga campaign against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. The right side remains one of the final unresolved positions in Mourinho’s starting eleven.
Neither player has won the contest yet, but neither has lost it either. After 240 minutes each, Mourinho still has a genuine choice — and that may be the best possible outcome for Real Madrid.
