HOW IT WORKS
Signing a player does not automatically make him eligible to play in La Liga. Before he can be included in a matchday squad, the league checks whether the full cost of his contract fits within the limit assigned to the club. Barcelona operated with such a small margin for several seasons that almost every registration first required a sale, a reduction in costs or additional recognised revenue.
HOW DOES LALIGA’S SYSTEM WORK?

THE SQUAD COST LIMIT
LaLiga assigns each club an individual Squad Cost Limit, known as the LCPD. It covers far more than first-team wages: bonuses, social security, agent fees, transfer amortisation, the coaching staff, youth teams and other sporting sections are also included.

WHAT DOES THE 1:1 RULE MEAN?
A club operating under the 1:1 rule can use all the room created by selling a player or reducing his cost. It does not mean unlimited spending. If the existing squad already consumes almost all the approved limit, even a 1:1 club must make room before registering another contract.

A TRANSFER COSTS MORE THAN THE FEE
If a player costs €60 million and signs a five-year contract, the transfer amortisation alone uses roughly €12 million of the limit each season. His wages, bonuses and commissions must then be added. This is why a “free” signing can still be difficult to register when the salary is high.
WHY DID BARCELONA GET INTO THIS POSITION?
FC BARCELONA · REGISTRATION EXPLAINED
YEARS OF LIMITED ROOM
For years Barcelona combined high squad costs with major financial commitments and losses. The move away from Camp Nou also reduced matchday income. Returning to the stadium and signing new commercial agreements improved the position, but the old commitments could not disappear within a single transfer window.

LALIGA MUST RECOGNISE THE REVENUE
The dispute over roughly €100 million from the sale of VIP seats at the rebuilt Camp Nou showed how this works. When the accounting treatment was questioned by the auditors, LaLiga lowered Barcelona’s limit. Money can exist in a contract, but registration also depends on when and how the league allows it to be recognised.

HOW DOES THE CLUB CREATE ROOM?
The simplest solutions are selling a player, arranging a loan where the other club pays part of the salary, ending an expensive contract or reducing its cost. New commercial revenue and financial contributions can also help, but their effect on the limit must first be approved by LaLiga’s validation body.

REGISTRATIONS ARE STILL IN PROGRESS
According to Cadena SER, 18 players were registered at the beginning of August. Barcelona insisted there was no reason for concern and expected every required player to be available for the first La Liga match. The club is also working on financing backed by future television income, although LaLiga assesses the registration effect of every operation separately.
In short: Barcelona can sign a contract before creating room under the limit, but the player cannot appear in La Liga without an approved registration. The 1:1 rule makes operating easier; it does not remove the spending limit or the document checks.
