Atlético Say No. Barça Are Still Waiting for Álvarez
Diego Simeone insists Julián Álvarez’s situation is clear: Atlético have made their decision and intend to keep developing their striker. Barcelona’s interpretation is slightly different — nothing has changed. When a club wants to hear “yes” badly enough, even another firm rejection can apparently be treated as part of the negotiations.
According to Joan Poquí of Mundo Deportivo, Álvarez remains Deco and Hansi Flick’s first-choice target for the number-nine position. Barça expect the Argentine to request a transfer after returning from holiday and persuade Atlético to enter talks. Only then would the Catalans submit another offer. The entire strategy therefore depends on the player reopening a door Atlético have just slammed shut again.
The coming week is expected to settle the matter. If Álvarez cannot change Atlético’s position, Barcelona will activate their Plan B, while Ferran Torres’ departure is also expected to be completed, according to the same report. Barça begin their LaLiga campaign on 23 August, so the time for waiting is nearly over. Soon they may have to pursue a striker who is actually available, rather than one who exists mainly in the club’s plans.
