Barcelona could host the 2029 Champions League final, but the team’s place is not included
UEFA will choose between Spotify Camp Nou and Wembley as the venue for the 2029 Champions League final on 15 September.
UEFA will decide on 15 September whether the 2029 Champions League final will be staged at Spotify Camp Nou or Wembley. Barcelona therefore have an opportunity to secure a place in European football’s biggest club game almost three years in advance — for the stadium, at least. The team will still have to qualify in the usual way.
The decision will be taken by the UEFA Executive Committee during its meeting in Thessaloniki. Hosts for several European club finals scheduled for 2028 and 2029 are on the agenda.
SPOTIFY CAMP NOU AGAINST WEMBLEY
The Barcelona bid is supported by FC Barcelona, the city council, the Catalan government, the Spanish Football Federation and Spain’s national government. Wembley is the only other official candidate.
“Mundo Deportivo” reports that Spotify Camp Nou enters the final decision as the favourite. That assessment has not been confirmed by UEFA, so it should not be mistaken for the result. Until the Executive Committee announces its choice, Barcelona and London remain competing bids.
Barcelona’s proposal is built around the planned capacity of the rebuilt stadium, as well as the city’s transport and hotel infrastructure. Spotify Camp Nou is expected to hold 104,600 spectators after the renovation, including 9,400 VIP seats. Wembley has a capacity of around 90,000.
UEFA KNOWS THE CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE
There is an obvious catch: Spotify Camp Nou is still being rebuilt. According to the schedule reported by “Mundo Deportivo”, the roof is due to be installed in the summer of 2027, with the entire project expected to be finished by early 2028 at the latest.
UEFA is reportedly aware of those deadlines and has considered them while assessing the bid. A polished presentation will not be enough if Barcelona are selected, however. The club and its institutional partners would have to provide a completed, fully operational stadium well before the final on 2 June 2029.
The calendar offers some breathing room. Given how many projected dates have already accompanied the Camp Nou redevelopment, nobody should throw that calendar away just yet.
A THIRD EUROPEAN FINAL AT CAMP NOU
Camp Nou has staged two previous European Cup finals. Milan defeated Steaua Bucharest 4-0 in 1989, while Manchester United produced their famous stoppage-time comeback to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in 1999.
A successful bid would bring another major European night to Barcelona regardless of the first team’s results. It is the safest possible route to the final: the stadium can qualify before the players do.
