Just when it seemed Barcelona would finally focus on targets within their reach, Julián Álvarez’s name is back in the headlines. According to Cadena SER and Sport, the Atlético Madrid striker remains one of Joan Laporta’s dream signings. There’s just one obstacle: Atlético have absolutely no intention of selling him, while the figures mentioned in recent reports reach as high as €130 million.

It’s a bit like browsing a Ferrari catalogue with just enough money for a free cup of coffee. Barcelona have spent months talking about Financial Fair Play restrictions, reducing costs and balancing the books, yet the moment a world-class star becomes available, the calculator somehow disappears.

Álvarez is coming off another excellent season and remains one of Europe’s most highly rated forwards. Unsurprisingly, Atlético see no reason to open negotiations. Barcelona, however, seem happy to keep dreaming. And to be fair, if there’s one trophy they consistently compete for, it’s the annual championship of unrealistic transfer fantasies.
