Barcelona Found a Striker. Then They Saw the Price: €80 Million
Luis Suárez at Barcelona? It sounds familiar, but this time the story was not about the Uruguayan who scored goals alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar. The player on the club’s list was Luis Javier Suárez Charris, Sporting CP’s Colombian striker. He appeared as an option, Barcelona discovered the price and the idea was almost immediately put aside.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Barcelona will not activate the player’s €80 million release clause. Sporting have no intention of negotiating a lower fee or offering a convenient discount to a club suddenly in need of a new number nine. The Portuguese side expect Suárez to remain in Lisbon.
Only a few days ago, the Colombian was being presented as one of the alternatives to Julián Álvarez. Barcelona have still been unable to convince Atlético Madrid to sell the Argentine, forcing them to consider other strikers. Suárez fitted the sporting profile, had enjoyed an excellent season and already knew Spanish football. Then Barcelona reached the part of the operation that so often causes trouble: the price.
Sporting protected their investment very well. Suárez joined the Portuguese club from UD Almería in July 2025, signed a contract running until June 2030 and received an €80 million release clause. He had cost approximately €25 million only a year earlier. Barcelona were presented with a price more than three times higher and quickly decided that the familiar surname was not quite that attractive.
The interest was not completely surprising. Suárez scored 31 goals and provided eight assists for Almería during the 2024/25 season. He subsequently adapted well to Portuguese football and became an important player for Sporting. The Lisbon club therefore have no reason to sell their first-choice striker for less than the figure written into his contract.
Barcelona are now back where they started. Álvarez remains an extremely difficult and expensive target, while one of the more prominent alternatives has been discarded before negotiations could become serious. Following Ferran Torres’ departure and the other changes made to the attack, Hansi Flick still needs a centre-forward. Unfortunately, the list of suitable players is becoming neither longer nor cheaper.
Suárez is therefore expected to stay at Sporting. Barcelona can continue with a familiar part of their transfer window: identifying an excellent player, checking his price and quietly moving on to the next tab.
