Barcelona open the history books after six games with a record in sight
Barcelona have won their first six competitive games. Victory over Racing would give Hansi Flick’s side the best start in the club’s history.
Barcelona have started the 2026/27 season with six victories from six competitive matches. That has already triggered the historical comparisons, with Hansi Flick’s side now one win away from setting the best opening run in the club’s history.
A victory over Racing Santander would make this the first Barcelona team to win its opening seven competitive fixtures.
SIX MATCHES ARE ENOUGH TO MAKE HISTORY
Barcelona have won their first five La Liga games against Elche, Athletic Club, Rayo Vallecano, Valencia and Levante. They also defeated Feyenoord in the Champions League.
The record is straightforward: six matches and six victories. Flick’s team have matched the best start ever recorded by a Barcelona side.
The season has barely begun, but the club’s history books are already open. In Barcelona, no promising run is too young to receive a commemorative headline.
THREE TEAMS STOPPED AT SIX
Only three previous Barcelona teams had won their first six competitive games of a season.
James Bellamy’s side achieved it in 1929/30 by winning its opening six league fixtures. Ljubiša Broćić repeated the feat in 1960/61 with four league victories and two European Cup wins over Lierse.
Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona became the third in 2018/19. That run included the Spanish Super Cup victory over Sevilla, four La Liga wins and a 4-0 Champions League triumph against PSV Eindhoven.
None of them reached seven. Bellamy’s team drew with Athletic Club, Broćić’s side lost to Atlético Madrid and Valverde’s Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw by Girona.
RACING STAND BETWEEN BARCELONA AND THE RECORD
Barcelona host Racing Santander at Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday, 16 September, with kick-off scheduled for 21:30 CEST.
A win would establish a new club record of seven consecutive victories at the beginning of a season. The distinction matters: this is not a record involving seven La Liga rounds, as Barcelona’s European victory over Feyenoord is also included.
Racing have therefore been assigned a role in Barcelona’s latest historical production. They now have the inconvenient opportunity to refuse it.
A REAL RECORD AND SOME VERY EARLY CELEBRATIONS
The achievement is genuine and fully supported by the results. It is also September, with only six competitive matches completed.
Flick struck a more restrained note after the victory over Levante, stressing that the season was only beginning and that previous numbers mattered little to him. The surrounding narrative has moved more quickly. The record has not been broken yet, but the headline is already waiting for Barcelona to finish the job.
