Barcelona sell Lovro Chelfi after just over a year at the club
Barcelona have officially sold Lovro Chelfi to Saudi club Diriyah. The fee was not disclosed, while Barça retained a future-sale percentage.
Lovro Chelfi’s spell at Barcelona lasted little more than a year. The 19-year-old Croatian has been permanently transferred to Saudi club Diriyah, with Barcelona retaining a percentage of any future sale.
The club did not reveal the transfer fee. Once again, the public announcement confirms that a deal has been completed while leaving out the number required to judge it properly.
FROM PROMISING ARRIVAL TO EARLY EXIT
Chelfi joined Barcelona from Croatian side NK Kustošija in July 2025 and was initially assigned to the Under-19 team. He made 22 appearances at youth level before taking part in Barça Atlètic’s preseason preparations this summer.
That involvement suggested he might be given an opportunity to establish himself with the reserve side. Instead, his next move takes him away from Barcelona and European football altogether.
The decision should not be turned into criticism of the player. Chelfi is entitled to choose the environment he considers best for his career. The uncomfortable question concerns Barcelona’s planning. A player recruited internationally as a prospect has left after one season, before the club managed to establish a clear route for him beyond the youth team.
NO TRANSFER FEE DISCLOSED
Barcelona’s statement contains no information about the fee paid by Diriyah. It only confirms that the Catalan club will receive a percentage of a potential future transfer.
The official announcement also makes no reference to a buy-back clause. Previous reports suggesting Barcelona would retain such a right should therefore not be presented as confirmed terms of the agreement.
A future-sale percentage could eventually prove useful if Chelfi develops and moves again. For now, however, it remains a possibility rather than guaranteed income. Without the initial fee, there is no reliable way to assess the financial outcome of the operation.
ANOTHER SHORT-LIVED DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Barcelona regularly emphasise their search for young international talent. Chelfi’s departure highlights the other side of that policy: recruiting a prospect is considerably easier than creating a convincing pathway for him.
After 22 youth appearances and one preseason with Barça Atlètic, the Croatian is already moving on. Barcelona thanked him for his dedication and professionalism, while keeping a share of a transfer that may or may not happen in the future.
The club has preserved a potential financial benefit. What it has not explained is why a development project launched in July 2025 reached its final chapter barely a year later.
