Barcelona thrash Valencia 5-0 as the hosts offer almost no resistance
Barcelona beat Valencia 5-0 as Lamine Yamal scored twice and Fermín López, Raphinha and Pedri also found the net at Mestalla.
FC Barcelona maintained their perfect LaLiga record with a 5-0 victory at Mestalla. Lamine Yamal scored twice, while Fermín López, Raphinha and Pedri also found the net. The visitors were sharp and ruthless, although Valencia made their task considerably easier with a remarkably passive performance.
This was not evidence of a deliberate surrender. In sporting terms, however, Valencia rolled out the red carpet. Carlos Corberán’s side dropped deep, failed to apply pressure and spent most of the afternoon watching Barcelona circulate the ball. The numbers were brutal: 26 per cent possession, three attempts and no big chances for the hosts.
YAMAL NEEDED SIX MINUTES
Barcelona opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Fermín released Lamine Yamal, who provided the finish. The winger had the ball in the net again two minutes later, but the second effort was ruled out for offside.
That escape offered Valencia an opportunity to respond. Instead, the hosts remained deep and continued to give Barcelona time to pick their passes.
Anthony Gordon created the second goal in the 22nd minute, finding Fermín for a composed finish. Barça went into the interval two goals ahead and in complete control against a side showing little appetite to disrupt their rhythm.
The visitors’ only significant first-half setback was Eric García’s injury. He was forced off following a collision with Rodri and Jules Koundé replaced him in the 29th minute.
NO RESPONSE AFTER THE BREAK
Any Valencia response disappeared within five minutes of the restart. Fermín recorded his second assist of the afternoon and Raphinha converted to make it 3-0.
Corberán reacted with three substitutions in the 54th minute, introducing Harvey Elliott, César Tárrega and José Gayà. The personnel changed; the nature of the contest did not. Barcelona continued to move through midfield with minimal pressure and regularly reached the edge of the Valencia penalty area.
Hansi Flick’s side finished with 74 per cent possession, 25 shots and 54 touches inside the opposition box. Valencia managed only three attempts and ten penalty-area touches. Barcelona completed 706 passes at a 92 per cent success rate, compared with the hosts’ 195 at 72 per cent.
Those figures explain why the game frequently resembled a training exercise. Barcelona played well, but Valencia’s lack of intensity removed nearly every obstacle normally associated with an away fixture at Mestalla.
OLMO ADDS TWO ASSISTS
Dani Olmo replaced Fermín in the 75th minute and required only four minutes to make an impact. His pass allowed Pedri to score Barcelona’s fourth goal.
Olmo supplied another assist in the 84th minute, with Lamine completing his brace and the scoring. By that stage, Valencia appeared to be waiting for the final whistle rather than attempting to limit the damage.
Barcelona punished every weakness placed in front of them and deserved their emphatic victory. The scoreline, however, cannot be separated from the hosts’ dreadful performance. Valencia created no big chances, offered almost no sustained pressure and allowed Flick’s players to dictate the match from beginning to end.
Barça now have 12 points from four LaLiga matches and sit at the top of the table. The champions looked convincing, but Mestalla provided resistance in name only.
