Carragher praises Barcelona’s style after acknowledging Real Madrid’s superior record
Jamie Carragher praised Barcelona’s style after their 5-1 win over Feyenoord but first acknowledged Real Madrid as the most successful team.
Jamie Carragher was full of admiration for Barcelona following their 5-1 victory over Feyenoord. Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, the former Liverpool defender described the Catalan side as a special club with a distinctive brand of football. Before the praise began to flow, however, he made an important admission: Real Madrid are “the most successful team.”
REAL MADRID’S RECORD CAME FIRST
Carragher’s wording matters. He was referring to Real Madrid as the club with the greatest record of success, not simply the most clinical team in a particular match. That assessment is difficult to dispute when Madrid’s official honours list includes a record 15 European Cups. Barcelona have won the competition five times.
Only after establishing that hierarchy did Carragher move into the more subjective part of his argument. He suggested that Real Madrid’s victories are remembered for the trophies, while Barcelona’s finest teams are also associated with a recognisable way of playing.
It was praise for an identity rather than an attempt to rewrite the record books. Style can be debated in a television studio. Fifteen European Cups require considerably less interpretation.
A 5-1 WIN STARTS THE COMEBACK STORY
Carragher’s comments followed Barcelona’s emphatic 5-1 win over Feyenoord in their opening league-phase match of the Champions League. Hansi Flick’s side produced an impressive performance and deserved the positive reaction generated by the result.
The former England international argued that Europe’s biggest clubs eventually return and said it was time for Barcelona to regain the position they held during their strongest eras. He also claimed that there would be few better sights than Barcelona winning the Champions League in their own way.
It is an attractive story, especially after five goals in the opening match. It is also still a story based on one September evening. Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5-1; they did not complete an entire Champions League campaign in 90 minutes, even if some of the reaction appeared eager to skip several chapters.
STYLE IS SUBJECTIVE, SUCCESS IS RECORDED
Carragher is entitled to prefer Barcelona’s football. Their best teams created an identity that influenced the sport and produced extraordinary results. The current side may yet build something significant under Flick.
His opening concession nevertheless remains the clearest part of the discussion. Real Madrid’s place as Europe’s most successful club is supported by the trophies already won, while Barcelona’s potential return must still be confirmed across a full campaign.
Barcelona took the applause for style after beating Feyenoord 5-1. Real Madrid kept the historical benchmark against which every European comeback is ultimately measured.
