Courtois skips Nations League to extend his Real Madrid career
Thibaut Courtois will miss Belgium’s Nations League campaign as he looks to reduce his workload and extend his career with Real Madrid.
Thibaut Courtois has decided to sit out Belgium’s upcoming Nations League campaign. The goalkeeper is not retiring from international football. He wants to reduce his workload, improve his recovery and give himself a better chance of playing at the highest level for Real Madrid for several more years.
A BREAK RATHER THAN AN INTERNATIONAL RETIREMENT
Belgian media first reported the decision, with Reuters subsequently providing further details. Courtois has discussed his plan with Belgium’s new head coach Mark van Bommel, who understands the goalkeeper’s position.
The 34-year-old is expected to miss Belgium’s six Nations League fixtures over the next three months. The Red Devils have been drawn alongside France, Italy and Türkiye. According to “AS”, Courtois could reconsider his absence if Belgium were left with serious availability problems in goal.
His decision does not bring his international career to an end. Courtois intends to remain available when qualifying for the 2028 European Championship begins in March 2027. He also accepts that he will have to compete for his position when he returns rather than immediately reclaiming the starting role.
REAL MADRID BENEFIT FROM THE DECISION
For Real Madrid, the advantages are clear. Courtois will avoid six additional matches, international travel and repeated changes to his training schedule. He can instead remain in Madrid, recover between club games and continue working with José Mourinho’s staff.
Courtois has acknowledged that maintaining the same demanding schedule for another four years may not be physically realistic. Reducing his international workload is therefore intended to protect the later stages of his career rather than signal any loss of ambition.
His value to Real was evident again in the 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter. Courtois produced several important saves as the Italian side pushed for an equaliser. Giving him more recovery time is not simply a concession to an experienced player. It is a practical way of protecting one of the team’s most decisive performers.
HIS REAL MADRID CONTRACT RUNS UNTIL 2027
Courtois remains under contract at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2027. “AS” reports that Real Madrid are considering an extension, although no agreement or formal negotiations have been announced.
The Belgian has previously said that his goal is to finish his career at Real Madrid. His Nations League break supports that intention while leaving the door open for a return to Belgium duty in more important qualifying matches.
Belgium will temporarily lose their most experienced goalkeeper. Real Madrid, meanwhile, should have a fresher Courtois available during a demanding club season. After the serious injuries he has already overcome, managing his calendar now looks like a sensible attempt to preserve both his health and his elite level.
