Dani Ceballos returns to Real Betis as Romano confirms agreement
Dani Ceballos is returning to Real Betis as a free agent. Fabrizio Romano reports that the midfielder has agreed a contract until June 2029.
Dani Ceballos is set to become a Real Betis player once again. Fabrizio Romano has given the move his “here we go”, reporting that the midfielder has agreed a three-year contract running until June 2029. The Spaniard will arrive as a free agent after previously ending his Real Madrid deal. Official confirmation from the clubs is still pending.
THE RETURN THAT WAITED ALL SUMMER
Ceballos and Betis have reportedly agreed the key terms of the move. According to Romano, the 30-year-old will sign a contract until 30 June 2029. No agreement between the two clubs is required because the midfielder has been a free agent since the end of June.
Real Madrid and Ceballos officially ended their relationship by mutual consent on 26 June. His contract had originally been due to run for another year, but both sides decided to bring his time at the Santiago Bernabéu to an early conclusion. The player was allowed to choose his next club, and his priority remained unchanged throughout the summer: a return to Betis.
Being available without a transfer fee did not make the operation particularly quick. Betis still needed to create room in their wage budget and spent the summer working on several departures. Ceballos was free. Fitting him into the squad was not quite as simple.
REAL MADRID WILL RECEIVE NO TRANSFER FEE
Real Madrid will not earn a fee from the midfielder’s return to Seville. Ceballos joins Betis as a free agent because his spell in Madrid formally ended more than two months ago.
Madrid gave up the possibility of selling him but also removed the salary of a player who had held a limited role during his final season. This was a departure prepared well in advance, rather than a deadline-day sale negotiated between the two clubs.
Ceballos leaves Real Madrid after making 215 appearances and winning 16 trophies. His collection includes three European Cups, two LaLiga titles and four Club World Cups. He also spent two seasons on loan at Arsenal between 2019 and 2021.
The medal count is impressive. The number of seasons in which he was an undisputed starter is considerably smaller. There always seemed to be another midfielder ahead of him in Madrid’s hierarchy, while his patience proved far more consistent than his place in the starting eleven.
BACK WHERE EVERYTHING BEGAN
Ceballos developed in the Betis academy and began his professional career with the club. He represented the first team between 2014 and 2017 before Real Madrid brought him to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Nine years later, he returns to Seville as a much more experienced player. He does not need to introduce himself to the supporters or convince them that the green-and-white shirt matters to him. He spent the past few months waiting for Betis, even when the club was not yet ready to complete the deal.
For Ceballos, it is a return to the place where he received his first major opportunity. For Betis, it is the addition of an experienced midfielder without a transfer fee. For Real Madrid, the matter was settled in June, even if the player’s name has only now returned to the headlines.
Romano’s “here we go” has arrived. The official Betis announcement, signature and registration must still follow, but after an entire summer of waiting, those appear considerably smaller than the obstacles already cleared.
