Deco closes the Álvarez case, then leaves him a guide for next year
Deco confirmed Barcelona’s offer for Julián Álvarez and compared the situation to his own move from Porto, which was delayed by one year.
Deco insists Barcelona never encouraged Julián Álvarez to publicly force his way out of Atlético Madrid. The sporting director did, however, confirm that Barça submitted a formal offer before telling the story of his own delayed move from Porto to Barcelona. The lesson was difficult to miss: stay, perform and wait another year.
It was not an official message to Álvarez, of course. Deco merely chose to tell the story while answering a question about Álvarez. At Barcelona, subtle communication sometimes means leaving the recipient’s name off the envelope.
BARCELONA MADE AN OFFER
Speaking to RAC1, Deco confirmed that Barcelona attempted to sign the Atlético striker during the summer transfer window. The proposal would have seen the fee paid across three seasons. He described it as a formal and proper offer.
According to Deco, Atlético did not respond because the club had no intention of selling the player. There was therefore no agreement between the clubs and no contract was signed. Álvarez remains an Atlético Madrid player.
“We did things properly. We made an offer, there was no response. They did not want to sell the player,” Deco explained.
Barcelona maintained that they handled the approach respectfully. Joan Laporta discussed the offer in public, Atlético publicly defended their position and Álvarez’s name remained in the headlines for most of the summer. It was a remarkably private pursuit conducted in front of a very large audience.
DECO REVISITS HIS PORTO STORY
The most revealing part of the interview came when Deco compared the situation with his own playing career. He wanted to leave Porto for Barcelona in 2003, but club president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa refused to let him go.
“Pinto da Costa told me to stay for another year and that I could leave for wherever I wanted the following summer,” Deco recalled.
The midfielder remained at Porto for the 2003/04 campaign. He won the Champions League under José Mourinho, was named man of the match in the final against AS Monaco and then completed his move to Barcelona. Porto received €15 million and Ricardo Quaresma as part of the deal.
Deco also said Chelsea had made a financially stronger proposal, but his preferred destination was Barcelona. Once Porto blocked the initial move, his only option was to play well and wait.
NOT A PLAN, JUST A VERY CONVENIENT COMPARISON
Deco did not say Barcelona will return for Álvarez in 2027. He did not confirm an agreement with the player or present another attempt as an approved plan. Any suggestion that the story contains instructions for the Argentine is an interpretation rather than an official announcement.
Still, the parallels were arranged rather neatly. Atlético refused to sell Álvarez; Porto once refused to sell Deco. The Argentine must remain in Madrid; Deco stayed in Portugal. Barcelona may still be his preferred destination; the current sporting director has now explained publicly how he handled an identical delay.
During the same interview, Deco stressed that Barcelona never asked Álvarez to announce publicly that he wanted to leave Atlético. That may be entirely true. A carefully timed autobiography can communicate plenty without becoming a direct request.
BARCELONA SAY THEY HAVE MOVED ON
Deco also said he no longer wanted to discuss Álvarez. After failing to sign the Argentine, Barcelona brought in Gabriel Jesus as an alternative with a similar attacking profile. The sporting director admitted that replacing Robert Lewandowski directly was practically impossible.
As things stand, the Álvarez pursuit is over. Atlético refused to sell, Barcelona selected another striker and the player remains under contract in Madrid. There is no confirmation that negotiations will resume next year.
All that remains is Deco’s Porto story: entirely innocent, apparently free of subtext and delivered while discussing the exact player Barcelona failed to sign. Álvarez can now focus on performing well and make absolutely no assumptions about what another summer might bring.
