Diomande lights up the wing as Mbappé reaches another historic mark
Yan Diomande recorded his first Real Madrid assist as Mbappé reached seven LaLiga goals in the opening six matches.
Yan Diomande produced his strongest performance yet for Real Madrid in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Elche. The Ivorian registered his first assist for the club, completed seven successful dribbles and created three chances.
Mbappé turned one of those opportunities into a goal before later providing the assist for Carlos Espí’s stoppage-time winner.
DIOMANDE RECORDS HIS FIRST ASSIST
The breakthrough arrived in the 33rd minute. Federico Valverde released Diomande into space on the right, allowing the winger to accelerate towards the penalty area and deliver a precise pass across goal. Mbappé finished the move first time to give Madrid a 2-0 lead.
It was Diomande’s first assist since joining Real Madrid, but his contribution went beyond that single moment. He completed a match-high seven dribbles and created three chances, more than any other player on the pitch.
Diomande started on the right before switching to the opposite wing following José Mourinho’s second-half changes. His performance was not flawless, particularly during the defensive sequence that preceded Elche’s equaliser, but his attacking impact was clear. He repeatedly carried the ball past defenders and gave Madrid a direct outlet on both flanks.
MBAPPÉ MAINTAINS HIS REMARKABLE PACE
Mbappé’s goal against Elche was his seventh in the opening six LaLiga matches. He has now reached that total at the start of two consecutive league seasons.
According to Managing Madrid, the last player to score seven times in the first six league games in consecutive campaigns was Hugo Sánchez in 1987.
The Frenchman also played a decisive role in the winning goal. Jude Bellingham carried the ball forward and released Mbappé, who could have attempted to finish the move himself. Instead, he found Carlos Espí in a better position, allowing the substitute to score from close range.
A NEW PARTNERSHIP TAKES SHAPE
Diomande’s display offers Mourinho another encouraging attacking option. The winger needed time to establish himself in the starting line-up, but his performance at the Martínez Valero showed what he can add when given space to run at defenders.
His combination with Mbappé was especially promising. Diomande supplied the pace and delivery, while the striker attacked the space with perfect timing. One direct move was enough to take Elche’s defence apart and produce the Ivorian’s first Real Madrid assist.
