Flick speaks to Gavi as midfielder waits for a bigger role
Hansi Flick held a brief conversation with Gavi before Barcelona’s match against Racing Santander as the midfielder waits for more playing time.
Hansi Flick held a brief conversation with Gavi before Barcelona’s final training session ahead of the match against Racing Santander. Spanish media witnessed the exchange, although neither the coach nor the player has revealed exactly what was said.
That has not stopped the moment from developing into a story about encouragement, patience and a possible return to the starting line-up. In Barcelona, a short touchline conversation can occasionally receive more attention than the footballer’s actual minutes on the pitch.
FLICK REPORTEDLY CALLED FOR PATIENCE
According to “AS”, Flick wanted to encourage Gavi after a difficult start to the season in terms of playing time. The coach reportedly asked the midfielder to remain patient and continue working because another opportunity would eventually arrive.
“Mundo Deportivo” was more cautious, reporting only that Flick spoke briefly with Gavi before training. Barcelona have not released a statement about the conversation, while Flick has not confirmed that the midfielder will start the next game.
The distinction matters. The conversation happened, but its precise content comes from media reporting rather than a public comment from Flick or Gavi.
OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN LIMITED
Gavi started Barcelona’s league match against Elche but was substituted after suffering a blow to his knee. The change was precautionary and the injury did not prove serious, although he subsequently missed the squads for the games against Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano.
After returning, Gavi played 11 minutes against Feyenoord in the Champions League. He then remained on the bench throughout Barcelona’s victory over Levante.
Competition in midfield is intense, particularly with Rodri establishing himself as an important part of Flick’s team. There is no confirmed dispute and no suggestion that Barcelona have decided to remove Gavi from their plans. For now, he simply sits lower in the selection order than he would like.
That explanation may sound ordinary, which is probably why the image of Flick taking him aside has quickly acquired a storyline of its own.
RACING COULD PROVIDE AN OPENING
Barcelona host Racing Santander at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday at 9:30 pm CEST. With another league match away to Sevilla scheduled for Saturday, changes to the starting line-up are possible.
That could create an opportunity for Gavi, but reports describing him as a potential starter remain predictions rather than a confirmed decision. Flick had every available first-team player involved in Tuesday’s session, with Hamza Abdelkarim also joining the group.
The Racing match should provide a clearer answer than any training-ground photograph. Either Gavi’s wait will finally end, or Barcelona’s latest tale of patience will require another chapter.
