João Pedro signs until 2034 as Chelsea close off another Barcelona option
Barcelona had João Pedro on their list of potential attacking reinforcements. Chelsea have now delivered a particularly clear response: a new contract, the number nine shirt and a commitment running until 2034. If somebody in Catalonia still has his name written in a notebook, there is now plenty of time to draw a line through it.
The London club have officially announced that the 24-year-old Brazilian has signed fresh terms. Chelsea present the agreement as a contract lasting until 2034. Earlier reporting from AS described its structure as a deal until 2032 with the possibility of extending it by another two years.
The practical meaning is considerably simpler: João Pedro is not planning to leave.
The forward has also inherited Chelsea’s number nine shirt, reflecting his growing importance after an excellent first full season at Stamford Bridge. He scored 20 goals in all competitions and was voted the club’s Player of the Season by supporters. He also found the net in the Club World Cup semi-final and final as Chelsea lifted the trophy.
Chelsea have not merely kept him. They have made it clear that they intend to build their attack around him.
João Pedro explained in an official Chelsea interview that a conversation with Xabi Alonso helped him make the decision. The new manager outlined the role he would have in the team, while the player felt this was the right moment to extend his stay. He also said he had felt at home in London since joining the club.
Alonso was equally enthusiastic. The Spaniard described João Pedro as one of the team’s leaders and praised his personality, development and attitude in training. It did not sound like a manager preparing a player for sale. It sounded more like somebody removing Barcelona’s opportunity to ask for a price.
Barcelona’s interest was not invented solely to produce another summer transfer story. In April, Cadena SER reported that the Brazilian was being considered as one of the main alternatives to Julián Álvarez. Sique Rodríguez said the forward was highly rated inside the Catalan club.
Bojan Krkić also revealed that he had previously spoken to both the player and his representative. Those conversations were not part of formal transfer negotiations, but they allowed Barcelona to understand his situation and establish contact for the future. The former Barça forward believed João Pedro’s ability in tight spaces and his versatility would make him a good fit for Hansi Flick’s football.
According to AS, interest from Barcelona and Arsenal encouraged Chelsea to accelerate the renewal process. The London club reportedly informed both potential suitors that João Pedro was not for sale before offering him a significant salary increase and a more prominent position within the squad.
An important distinction must still be made. There is no confirmation that Barcelona submitted a formal offer. It would also be misleading to claim that João Pedro personally rejected the Catalan club. Chelsea secured his future after receiving expressions of interest, but there is no evidence that an agreement between the player and Barcelona was ever close.
Barcelona have not lost a completed transfer. They have lost an option before turning it into anything concrete.
João Pedro was viewed as a possible alternative if the attempt to sign Álvarez failed. The problem is that Barcelona remain unable to reach an agreement with Atlético Madrid, while their supposed backup plan has now committed his future to Chelsea until 2034. The alternative secured his future before the main operation moved anywhere near completion.
From a football perspective, Barcelona’s interest was understandable. João Pedro can play as a central striker, a second forward or an attacking midfielder. He is comfortable in combinations and offers more than simply waiting for chances inside the penalty area. It is a profile that could genuinely have suited Flick’s team.
Identifying a suitable profile is also the easiest part of a transfer. The player, his club and Barcelona’s own finances must then be convinced. Chelsea have saved the Catalans from having to conduct the first two conversations.
João Pedro has a new contract, an improved salary, the number nine shirt and a central role under Xabi Alonso. Barcelona have one fewer name on their list.
At least the list is becoming easier to read.
