Lamine Yamal scare eased as Flick confirms Valencia trip
Lamine Yamal trained separately after taking a knock, but Hansi Flick confirmed that the Barcelona winger will travel to Valencia.
Barcelona briefly raised concerns on Saturday when Lamine Yamal did not begin the final training session before the Valencia match with the rest of the squad. The winger remained in the gym while his teammates worked on the pitch, with no immediate explanation provided.
The missing context arrived shortly afterwards. Hansi Flick confirmed that Lamine had taken a knock and followed an individual programme as a precaution. He is feeling well enough to travel to Valencia, although his place in the starting lineup has not been decided.
AN ABSENCE FOLLOWED BY AN EXPLANATION
Lamine did not take part in the main group session at the start of Saturday’s training. Spanish reports said he initially worked in the gym before later appearing on the pitch at a reduced intensity.
Barcelona did not announce an injury or an expected recovery period. Flick subsequently explained that the adjusted programme was linked to a knock rather than a confirmed physical problem requiring him to miss the match.
“He had a knock. He did not train with the group, but he is fine. He will travel with us to Valencia,” the coach said.
The situation was therefore less serious than the first reports suggested. Barcelona simply delivered the information in familiar stages: the absence was seen first, the concern followed and the explanation eventually arrived at the press conference.
TRAVELLING DOES NOT GUARANTEE A START
Flick confirmed that Lamine will make the trip to Valencia, but he stopped short of naming the winger in his starting eleven.
“We will speak and decide whether he starts,” Flick added.
That distinction matters. Lamine is expected to be available, but a starting role has not been confirmed. Barcelona could still decide to manage his workload by using him from the bench.
Flick also suggested that the player is capable of managing his energy during matches. The final decision will depend on how Lamine feels and the medical staff’s assessment before the game.
CAUTION IS MORE USEFUL THAN PANIC
Lamine has started the season in excellent form. He scored twice in Barcelona’s 5-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano, with his first goal of the night taking him to 50 for the club.
His importance means any missed session will immediately attract attention. That makes it even more important to separate confirmed information from speculation. At this stage, the club and coach have referred to a knock and individual work, not an injury requiring a spell on the sidelines.
Reducing his workload before a match is a reasonable precaution. Allowing uncertainty to grow before providing a basic explanation was less impressive. For a while, the media were left to fill the gap before Flick personally turned off the alarm.
THE FINAL DECISION WILL COME AFTER A CONVERSATION
Lamine will travel with Barcelona for the match at Mestalla and may be involved. Whether he starts remains an open question.
Flick intends to speak with the player before making his decision. If there is no reaction to the knock, Lamine can feature. If the staff prefer to avoid unnecessary risk, he may begin on the bench.
Saturday morning’s concern did not develop into an official injury diagnosis. It ended with a lighter session, confirmation of the Valencia trip and one remaining decision over the starting lineup.
