Lamine Yamal settles the Ballon d’Or race himself, with Mbappé second in line
Lamine Yamal named himself and Mbappé as the world’s two best players but argued that he deserves to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.
Lamine Yamal has no intention of hiding behind false modesty. In a preview of his interview with Jorge Valdano, the Barcelona forward named himself and Mbappé as the two best players in the world. When it came to choosing who should win the Ballon d’Or, however, the shortlist quickly became a one-man race.
TWO AT THE TOP, ONE WINNER
“Mbappé and I are the two best players in the world,” Lamine Yamal said in the promotional clip for “Universo Valdano.”
The Spain international then argued that he deserved this year’s award because of the trophies he had won. He also suggested that the hierarchy should be clear to anyone who regularly watches the matches.
So there we have it. Mbappé has been granted a place alongside Barcelona’s number 10 at the top of the game, but the trophy itself has already been reserved by Valdano’s guest.
BARCELONA’S LIST OF ENDORSEMENTS IS COMPLETE
Hansi Flick, Deco and Joan Laporta have all backed Lamine Yamal’s candidacy, while Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has also spoken in his favour. The only endorsement still missing was the player’s own. That box has now been ticked.
None of this means that the Barcelona forward lacks a serious case. His performances, trophies and influence for club and country give voters plenty to consider. Yet the steady stream of public reminders surrounding his candidacy has become difficult to miss. Barcelona’s campaign no longer needs another spokesman; its candidate has delivered the message personally.
MBAPPÉ EARNS RESPECT FROM HIS LEADING RIVAL
The statement also represents considerable recognition for Mbappé. Lamine Yamal did not present a long list of contenders. He placed the Real Madrid forward alongside himself at the very top of world football.
Mbappé, though, can allow his performances and goals to make the argument for him. The final decision belongs to the journalists entitled to vote, not to candidates drawing up their own podium.
The complete interview with Jorge Valdano is scheduled to air on Movistar Plus+ on 18 September. The Ballon d’Or ceremony is due to take place in London on 26 October.
