Mourinho stands by Vinícius: “When a player gives everything, the coach is with him”

José Mourinho has offered Vinícius Júnior firm but measured support following Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Inter. The coach admitted that the Brazilian is not currently performing at his best, while praising the effort he continues to make for the team.

Vinícius was replaced in the 87th minute. Jeers could be heard from sections of the Santiago Bernabéu crowd, and the winger responded by applauding towards the stands. Mourinho applauded him as well before embracing the player and patting him on the back.

MOURINHO VALUES VINÍCIUS’ EFFORT

The Portuguese coach did not attempt to disguise the winger’s current form. He acknowledged that Vinícius is short of his best level and said the player is fully aware of it. Mourinho’s focus, however, was on the work being done to change that situation.

“He isn’t at his best, and we all see that. He’s the first to know it and is working very hard to be the player who decides matches. I have great respect for this Vinícius. The time will come when he decides matches,” Mourinho explained.

The Madrid coach also highlighted the Brazilian’s defensive contribution against Inter. Facing a team that used three centre-backs and pushed its wing-backs forward, Madrid’s wide players were required to track back and protect central areas.

SUPPORT DOES NOT GUARANTEE A STARTING PLACE

Mourinho made an important distinction. His support for Vinícius does not guarantee a place in the starting line-up or 90 minutes in every game. The player will still be judged on his form, tactical contribution and work for the team.

“If he works for the team, he always has my support. Does this mean he has to start every game or play 90 minutes every match? No. When a player gives everything, the coach is with him,” Mourinho said.

MADRID AWAITS VINÍCIUS AT HIS BEST

Vinícius left the Inter game without a goal or an assist. Mourinho admitted that the winger, at his sharpest, would probably have made more of the opportunities he received on the left.

There was no attempt to ignore those shortcomings. The message was straightforward: Vinícius must recover his best form, but his effort has not gone unnoticed. As long as he continues working for the side, Mourinho intends to stand beside him.
