Mourinho warns reporter as press room erupts in laughter
Jose Mourinho jokingly warned a COPE reporter during Real Madrid’s press conference. The smiling exchange offered a glimpse of his old media persona.
Jose Mourinho says he has returned to Real Madrid calmer, more composed and in greater control of his emotions. The evidence is encouraging. For now, he is only threatening journalists with a smile.
The light-hearted moment came during his press conference before Real Madrid’s home match against Real Sociedad. Mourinho addressed a Cadena COPE reporter whose contacts and information around the club had already been mentioned earlier in the session.
The coach praised the journalist’s sources before adding a warning of his own:
“You have many sources and you say good things, but if you speak badly about me, be very careful. I’ll come after you.”
The comment was clearly delivered as a joke and prompted laughter inside the press room. There was no confrontation, despite some headlines presenting the exchange as a threat. It was simply Mourinho turning an ordinary conversation with a reporter into the most replayed moment of the conference. Goal España reported the exchange and its humorous context.
Mourinho has repeatedly insisted that he is more relaxed than during his first spell in Madrid. During the same press conference, however, he joked that the players and club employees might be protecting him from his “dark side”. Anyone who followed his first three years at the Bernabeu will understand why nobody rushed to dismiss the possibility.
The mood around Valdebebas remains positive. Real Madrid opened their league campaign by beating Espanyol 2–1, while Mourinho also discussed Vinicius Junior, the transfer window and his return to the Bernabeu before facing Real Sociedad. Managing Madrid published a broader account of the press conference.
Yet one smiling warning produced the main headline. Mourinho may be older and calmer, but his ability to take control of a press room with a single sentence has survived perfectly.
The first reporter has now received his notice. Entirely in good humour, at least for the moment.
