Pedri dismisses doubts over Rodri partnership: “It is very comfortable”
Pedri dismissed concerns about playing alongside Rodri after Barcelona’s 5–0 victory over Valencia and backed their developing midfield partnership.
Pedri has pushed back against suggestions that playing alongside Rodri Hernández could restrict his influence at FC Barcelona. After the 5–0 victory over Valencia, the midfielder said he feels comfortable next to his new teammate and expects their understanding to improve with every appearance.
The supposed midfield problem did not make it beyond Rodri’s first start for the club.
THE NARRATIVE LASTED UNTIL KICK-OFF
Hansi Flick selected Rodri and Pedri together in midfield at Mestalla. Before the match, questions had been raised over whether two players who both enjoy controlling possession could operate effectively in the same system.
Pedri addressed that debate during his post-match interview with Movistar.
“People always say that Rodri and I do not work together, but the truth is that it is very comfortable to play with him,” he said. “You rarely see him lose the ball. We will understand each other very well, and with more games that connection will become even better. I think it can be spectacular.”
Those were not the words of a player worried about losing his role. Pedri was responding directly to an external narrative surrounding the partnership. Apparently, two intelligent midfielders are capable of sharing a pitch — although around Barcelona, even that fairly simple concept can require several rounds of public discussion.
PEDRI ADDS HIS NAME TO THE SCOREBOARD
Barcelona controlled the game and defeated Valencia 5–0 at Mestalla. Pedri scored the fourth goal in the 79th minute after combining with Dani Olmo and was applauded by sections of the home crowd when he was substituted.
Lamine Yamal scored twice, while Fermín López and Raphinha also found the net. Rodri came close to scoring himself when his header struck the crossbar.
One match cannot settle every tactical question, and Barcelona’s dominant result was not produced by a single midfield pairing. However, the first evidence did little to support claims that Rodri’s presence would diminish Pedri. The visitors controlled possession, set the tempo and repeatedly played through Valencia’s defensive structure.
ANOTHER OPTION FOR FLICK
Flick also praised Rodri’s intelligence, leadership and decision-making after the match. Rather than forcing Pedri away from his preferred areas, the former Manchester City midfielder can give Barcelona another secure passing option and allow the team to manage possession with greater control.
A broader judgement will require more matches and stronger opponents. Pedri’s position, however, is already clear: he sees Rodri as a teammate who makes the game easier, not as an obstacle. For now, the grand compatibility debate has encountered its least convenient opponent — the view of the player supposedly affected by it.
