Police uncover alleged plot to kidnap Kylian Mbappé
French investigators uncovered an alleged plot to kidnap Kylian Mbappé. An 18-year-old suspect has been charged and placed in detention.
French investigators have uncovered an alleged plan to kidnap and assault Kylian Mbappé. The Real Madrid forward reportedly appeared on a list of potential targets linked to a criminal group suspected of organising robberies and abductions. An 18-year-old suspect has been charged and placed in pre-trial detention.
The case was first reported by French newspaper Le Parisien. Investigators are examining a series of robberies, attempted break-ins and alleged kidnapping plans in and around Neuilly-sur-Seine between 11 April and 19 August.
MBAPPÉ APPEARED ON A LIST OF TARGETS
The main suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Clément L. He was formally charged in Nanterre on 21 August with organised group theft. Investigators suspect him of being involved in a series of home robberies and plans to abduct wealthy public figures.
Mbappé was reportedly among the people considered as potential targets. According to details published by Le Parisien, the group discussed assaulting and kidnapping the Real Madrid player before robbing him during one of his visits to Paris.
Police found 26 addresses linked to footballers, musicians and other celebrities on a seized phone. An address connected to Mbappé was reportedly included. The forward was allegedly selected because of his wealth.
INVESTIGATORS CONNECTED SEVERAL INCIDENTS
The investigation progressed following an attempted attack involving a Paris watchmaker. On 25 April, three men posing as delivery workers arrived at his home and left an empty package. The intended victim became suspicious, contacted the authorities and the men fled.
On 4 May, two armed men robbed the watchmaker’s shop in Paris. Eleven luxury watches worth approximately €150,000 were stolen. One suspect was later arrested after crashing during his escape.
Fingerprints recovered from the empty package helped police identify people allegedly connected to the group. The evidence eventually led investigators to the 18-year-old suspect.
INSTRUCTIONS WERE ALLEGEDLY SENT FROM PRISON
French reports claim that Clément L. coordinated some of the group’s activities from Villepinte prison, where he was already being held in connection with separate allegations.
After seizing his phone, investigators reportedly discovered the list of celebrity addresses as well as information concerning planned robberies and abductions.
During questioning, the suspect admitted that he knew the activities were illegal but denied being the main organiser. He described himself as an intermediary.
A court ordered him to remain in pre-trial detention and isolation while the investigation continues. A second person connected to the case was placed under judicial supervision.
NO ATTACK ON THE PLAYER TOOK PLACE
There is no indication that the alleged plan involving Mbappé progressed to a direct attempt against him. The preparations were discovered during a wider investigation into the suspected criminal group.
The Real Madrid forward was neither attacked nor abducted. At this stage, the case concerns alleged plans uncovered by investigators and charges brought against the suspects. The criminal proceedings remain ongoing.
