Yamal busy but wasteful as Gordon waits for the pass
Yamal had seven shots and created five chances against Athletic, but missed a big opportunity instead of setting up Gordon for an open-goal finish.
Seven shots, five chances created and no goal. Lamine Yamal was heavily involved against Athletic Club, but involvement alone does not make a performance outstanding. His numbers, highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, need to be considered alongside his finishing and decision-making.
The clearest example came before half-time, with Barcelona leading 1–0. Yamal shot instead of squaring to Gordon for an open-goal finish. Unai Simón saved, leaving the Englishman complaining about the missing pass. AFP’s match report describes both the chance and Gordon’s reaction.
It was a selfish choice in that moment. The problem was not simply that a forward tried to score; it was that a better option was available. Gordon needed the ball, not another opportunity to admire the goalkeeper’s reflexes.

Yamal remained a threat after the interval, striking the underside of the crossbar in the 53rd minute, as recorded in Barcelona’s official report. He kept looking for openings, but his finishing and the decision to ignore Gordon cannot disappear from the assessment.
This was an involved, occasionally dangerous display with clear shortcomings. Creating five chances deserves credit. It does not excuse failing to make the right pass when the opportunity was there.
