Mbappé responds to the PSG narrative: “Talking about me sells”
Mbappé addressed claims that PSG began winning the Champions League after his departure and explained why the narrative does not concern him.
Kylian Mbappé has pushed back against the convenient claim that Paris Saint-Germain began winning the Champions League because he left the club. Speaking before Real Madrid’s European opener against Inter, the French forward addressed the subject without taking anything away from his former team’s achievements.
THE QUESTION ABOUT PSG
During his press conference at Valdebebas, Mbappé was asked whether it was unfair to connect his departure with PSG’s subsequent Champions League triumphs. The Parisian club won the competition twice after the forward moved to Madrid, inevitably creating a new line of criticism around him.
“It is one analysis among many. Talking about me sells a lot, and I accept that,” Mbappé replied.
He did not dispute PSG’s success or attempt to reopen old arguments about his departure. His point was simpler: two events happening in sequence do not automatically prove that one caused the other. PSG finally lifted the trophy, but reducing the club’s transformation to the absence of a single player makes for an easy headline rather than a complete football analysis.
NO ATTEMPT TO AVOID RESPONSIBILITY
Mbappé also acknowledged that he and his teammates must continue improving, including in their defensive work. At the same time, he made it clear that criticism should not erase what attacking players contribute at the other end of the pitch.
Questions about his compatibility with Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham also returned. Mbappé refused to separate individual names from the collective. He stressed that Real Madrid’s players share the same objective: winning matches and competing for trophies.
It was a measured response from a player who knows that every sentence about PSG can become a story of its own. Mbappé neither attacked his former club nor accepted a simplistic explanation designed to place its previous European failures entirely on his shoulders.
THE FOCUS IS ON INTER
Real Madrid begin their Champions League campaign against Inter at the Santiago Bernabéu. Mbappé said his attention is on preparing for that match and finding the best way to help the team.
The debate surrounding PSG’s success after his departure is unlikely to disappear. Mbappé, however, has made his position clear. His time in Madrid will be judged by what he achieves with Real, not by a narrative built around the results of the club he left behind.
